Don’t Be Afraid of Opposition
Today we will be looking at Philippians 1:27-30. This is in continuation of our study of the book of Philippians.
Philippians 1:27-30 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved—and that by God. For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him, since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.
The passage begins with verse 27 that tells us that no matter what happens in life, we should conduct ourselves in a manner that is worthy of the gospel that we share and the kingdom that we represent, the kingdom of God. In short, we have to behave as heavenly citizens. You are not an ordinary person but the child of the Almighty God. It is important that we do not bring dishonor to God’s name. So, honor God through our behavior, our lives and our ministry.
As we read further, we see the heart of Paul towards the members of the church in Philippi. As their spiritual father, he doesn’t want anyone to fall away from the gospel that was preached to them nor be frightened by those that oppose the gospel. This is one of the reasons why he asks them to conduct themselves well so that when he hears their good report, Paul can be rest assured that the church is growing strong in the Lord. The circumstances around the church were less than favorable for the church but Paul implores them to stand firm in their faith and stand united as a church.
Living in unity is a great challenge if the Holy Spirit is not working among us. He is the Spirit of unity. In fact, standing strong in faith and in unity with one another is a sign of our salvation. When we look up to the sky, sometimes we see groups of birds flying together in a ‘V’ shape. The bird flying in the front faces the maximum drag from the air but the birds flying right behind it to the left and right will feel much less drag and hence saves their energy expenditure. Now when the bird in the front gets tired, it rotates with another bird flying behind it. If a bird falls out of formation, it experiences more difficulty while flying. In the same manner, when we are in unity with one another as a fellowship of believers, we can uplift each other and grow. Unity in the body strengthens endurance and courage.
Further reading verse 29 and 30 of Philippians 1 we see Paul telling the church that suffering for Christ is a privilege. When the apostles were beaten for the first time, they were very happy about it as they were counted worthy of suffering for the Son of God.
Colossians 1:4 Now I rejoice in what I am suffering for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church.
Just like in Philippians, in the above verse we read of how Paul rejoices in suffering for Christ and for the church. Jesus completed all sufferings for our redemption but there are few things that need to be completed by the body of Christ that is the church. This suffering is in different areas. It could be mentally or physically.
Second Timothy 3 verse 12 writes about the church having to face persecution if they want to follow a godly life in Jesus.
2 Timothy 3:12 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted
Finally, we’ll look at some life lessons we can pick up from the first chapter of Philippians.
1. Start with gratitude (v. 3)
The chapter starts with Paul expressing his gratitude for the church at Philippi. A thankful heart strengthens relationships and fuels joy. It is wise to have a grateful heart at all times. Start every moment with appreciation.
2. Pray with purpose (v. 4-5)
Don’t just pray for the sake of completing a to-do task but pray with focus and purpose. Don’t just pray for comfort but pray for maturity, discernment and fulfilment of God’s work in others.
3. God finishes what He starts (v. 6)
If God started it, He will bring it to completion. Trust God’s process. Even if the journey seems incomplete, He is a finisher.
4. True fellowship is rooted in the gospel (v. 5)
Christian unity is not based on personality but the purpose that God has for us. Real fellowship comes from a shared mission in Christ.
5. Your chains can advance the gospel (v. 12-13)
Don’t waste your pain but use it as a platform. God can transform lives through you
6. Influence others with your courage (v. 14)
Courage is contagious. When others see us stand strong then that can spark courage in others.
7. Keep Christ at the center at all times (v. 21)
Make Jesus your life’s ultimate focus. Life without Christ is existence but life with Christ is purpose.
8. Choose others over yourself (v. 24)
9. Joy is a choice, not a circumstance (v. 18)
Joy is not dependent on circumstances but on Christ.
10. Live a life worthy of the gospel (v. 27)
Let our conduct be worthy of Christ’s name and the good news we preach. Character matters more than conditions.
11. Stand together in unity (v. 27)
Kingdom impact increases when we stand united. Teamwork amplifies testimony.
12. Don’t be afraid of opposition (v. 28)
Fearlessness in the face of persecution is a sign of true faith and strength within you.
13. Suffering can be a gift (v. 29)
Suffering for Christ is not a punishment but a privilege and a part of our calling.
