Focus Verse - Proverbs 3:9,10 - Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.
Bishop David Oyedepo, a prominent Nigerian Pastor, frequently uses the expression to emphasize the importance of actively fighting financial lack through the application of God's principles, often stating: "Poverty is neither noble nor dignified. We should break the neck of poverty."
Matthew 6:33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Romans 8:32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?
1. Increase begins with Honor.
Financial blessing in Scripture is connected first to relationship with and reverence to God, who is the source of blessing. The blessing of the Lord brings wealth, without painful toil for it. (Proverbs 10:22)
2. Firstfruits reflect Trust.
Firstfruits means giving God the first and the best, not the leftovers. It is a tangible act of faith and gratitude, demonstrating that you trust God to provide for your future needs.
Exodus 23:19 - Bring the best of the firstfruits of your soil to the house of the LORD your God.
Matthew 6:21 - For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
2 Corinthians 8:5 - And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us.
God first looks at our heart, and then our hands. Just like the farmer, when you give God your "firsts", you set a foundation that consecrates and blesses the rest of your harvest.
3. Increase flows through wisdom and stewardship.
God blesses honor, but the Scripture also teaches management. Wealth mishandled can be wealth diminished.
Proverbs 21:5 - The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.
Luke 16:11- So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?
Ecclesiastes 11:2 - Invest in seven ventures, yes, in eight; you do not know what disaster may come upon the land.
Budgeting your money is highly encouraged. Avoid wastage of money and resources.
John 6:12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.”
4. Overflow has Purpose.
Overflow in Scripture is not only for comfort, it is for impact.
2 Corinthians 9:8 - And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
Luke 6:38 - Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
Genesis 12:2 - “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.
We should learn and practice to ‘Honor God First’!
