FOCUS VERSE: Colossians 4: 6 - Let your conversation be full of grace, seasoned with salt.
DECLARATION: My words build and bless today; the Spirit teaches me to speak with wisdom and gentleness.
Excellent speech begins with an excellent heart: Words are not manufactured in the tongue, they flow from the heart. Jesus taught that our tongue reveals the condition of our inner life. When the heart is filled with grace, the mouth speaks grace. When the heart is filled with Christ, the tongue reveals grace.
Luke 6: 45 - The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
Proverbs 16: 23 - The heart of the wise makes his speech judicious and adds persuasiveness to his lips.
Psalms 19: 14 - Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight.
The best way to transform our speech is to allow God to transform our hearts. The source of a stream - if it is hot, cold, muddy, salty, sweet - the stream will have such water. Pure and sweet water can flow only from a sweet and pure source. Healthy words flow from a healthy heart.
Words filled with grace carry great influence: Paul encourages us to always speak with words of grace. This does not mean concealing the truth but to speak the truth with kindness, love and humility. Such words release healing and restoration; God sent His word and healed all diseases.
Proverbs 16: 24 - Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.
Ephesians 4: 29 - Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
Proverbs 15: 1 - A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
Words can either deepen wounds or bring healing to a person.
Wise speech is timely and thoughtful: Paul exhorts us and says that our words should be seasoned with salt; salt enhances flavour, preserves, brings healing, purifies. Spirit-led speech is thoughtful and not impulsive; it is well-calculated. Sometimes it is best to keep silent.
Ecclesiastes 3: 7 - A time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;.......
Proverbs 25: 11 - A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.
James 1: 18 - Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.
Wisdom is heard in measured words. Wise speech knows the right measure. Eg: a seasoned chef prepares a dish putting in ingredients in the right measure. Seasoning and all powders should be added in the right measure that a perfect flavourful dish is completed.
Our speech represents Christ: Let every word that falls from our tongue reflect the character of Christ.
Matthew 12: 36 - I tell you, on the day of judgement people will give account for every careless word they speak.
Philippians 2: 14 and 15 - Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of god without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.
1 Peter 3: 15 - But in your hearts honour Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.
Our speech is a witness of our spiritual maturity. James compares the tongue to a rudder or a bridle of a horse. The wise know to control their tongue.
