The Fruit Of The Spirit #6: Goodness
We are continuing with our study on the series titled ‘The Fruit Of The Spirit’. Yesterday, we looked at one of the qualities or aspects - kindness. We saw that gifts of the Holy Spirit are based on our actions and the Fruit of the Holy Spirit is what we become. It is for us to become more like Jesus. We saw all these differences in detail in the previous episodes.
Galatians 5:19-20 talks about the works of the flesh in much detail.
The Holy Spirit that resides in us, when we depend on Him more and more, when His Word, His Spirit resides in us more and more, He will reveal His behaviour and nature through us.
We are going to the sixth point today - Goodness.
Galatians 5:22-23 says (22) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, (23) gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Matthew 5:16 says In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Because the Holy Spirit residing within us is good, we will also have good behavior.
Goodness is more than doing good things. It is a visible testimony of God’s inner work in us. It is the moral excellence that comes through walking with a Holy God and it shines brightest in dark places.
What is goodness?
It is the uprightness of heart and life.
Generosity rooted in righteousness.
A zeal for truth and doing what is right even when it costs.
Acts 10:38 says how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.
Those doing good might have to face ridicule and severe repercussions.
Kindness is very gentle but goodness is firm and courageous.
Goodness does what is right even when it is hard.
It is not showing morality but sincere purity born from walking with God.
When Jesus did good for us, he was given a crown of thorns and the cross. Just like that for us, when we do good, do not expect only good in return.
Joseph is a good example of someone who stayed in the path of goodness but in return he was put into jail. He chose purity over pleasure. (this is while facing the situation with Potiphar’s wife). If he had gone down the wrong path then he would have lost everything God had in store for him, everything he had dreamt of, received, prophesied, etc.
