One In Spirit
Focus: UNITY
Verse: Psalm 133: 1 - How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live in unity.
Declaration: I walk in the spirit of unity
During their journey to the Promised Land, whenever the people of Israel would stop at a place, they would camp in a ‘cross’ formation. It was a well-organised formation with three tribes on each side. If there is unity, there will be order. Unity is described as good and pleasant, morally right and emotionally beautiful. God delights when His people walk in harmony, because unity reflects the very nature of the ‘Trinity’. Unity originates from the Trinity. Father, Son and the Holy Spirit working in unity as one ‘Godhead’. There is agreement, harmony and a strong bonding in the Godhead.
John 17: 21 - ‘that they may all be one, just as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that You have sent Me. verse 22 - ‘ the glory that You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one even as We are One, Verse 23 - ‘ I in them and You in Me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that You sent Me and loved them even as You loved Me’.
Primarily, unity is evangelistic; it causes the world to believe in the Truth - it is very powerful. There is unity in strength, but alone one may become weak. Unity in a family keeps it strong, but disunity scatters and paves the way for the enemy to get in. This could happen in the church and in the country. If there is strife and internal struggle in a country, enemies countries will attack and try to conquer.
Secondly, unity releases God’s blessing. Read Psalm 133: 2 – ‘it is like precious oil on the head, flowing down the beard, on the beard of Aaron’. So, it is clear that unity attracts God’s blessings. It creates an environment where heaven is activated. Anointing will flow, miracles, healings will be evident.
Thirdly, unity is a spiritual responsibility. Ephesians 4: 3 - Make every effort to keep the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace’. This is a command. Every person in the church should take the decision to keep the unity alive. Unity should always be maintained; each person is responsible. It does not happen automatically. It requires a deliberate effort - pride, jealousy, offense and unforgiveness attack the unity of a church. Romans 12: 18 - ‘as far as possible, be at peace with everyone’. Unity requires humility and intentional effort.
Fourthly, division is the devil’s strategy. God never causes a split in anyone’s life. It was Satan who brought about disunity in the heavens, resulting in his fall along with one-third of the angels. 1 Cor. 1: 10 - ‘I appeal to you my brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another and there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgement’. Satan is well aware that he cannot destroy the church by force. By his strategy, he causes division in the church, in families and in the nations. Mark 3: 24 and 25 - “If the kingdom is divided against itself it cannot stand, if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.”
Fifthly, unity makes the church powerful. Acts 4: 32 - ‘Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common’. All the believers were in one mind and one heart. Unity produced generosity, miracles and revival in the early church. Let us consider a choir in the church - when everyone sings in harmony, in tune, it produces a melodious song, perfectly synchronised. On the contrary, if each person starts singing in different tunes and according to what he sees fit, there is chaos.
Sixthly, unity protects God’s work. Eccles. 4: 12 - ‘though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him, a threefold cord is not quickly broken’. One may be overpowered, but standing together provides strength. Unity makes God’s people resilient. They stand strong together.
God bless you all.
