FOCUS: LOVE
VERSE: 1 Cor. 13: 13 – So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
DECLARATION: I walk in divine love today. Love never fails and overcomes every barrier.
Love has the greatest kingdom value. Faith, hope and love – these are called the eternal riches. In our day to day life, we see the prices of commodities rising and falling — oil, gold, etc. But the price of faith, hope and love never fluctuates. The 13th chapter is called the ‘love chapter’, because it teaches us much about love for others. Whatever we may achieve in life, without love, it is all worthless. Paul goes on to say that spiritual gifts too, will pass away, but faith, hope and love is eternal.
The most valuable among these three is – LOVE. Faith connects us to God’s power. Hope anchors us in the future God has prepared for us. Love reflects God’s nature. This, therefore, is the greatest among the ‘kingdom values’. 1 John 4: 8 – ‘whoever does not love, does not know God, because God is love’. Someone who has known God is captured by His love because He is the embodiment of love; He is saturated with love. The essence of God is LOVE.
LOVE is the mark of true discipleship. 1 John 13: 34 – ‘a new command I give you, love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know you are My disciples’. This is the hallmark of Christianity. A disciple of Jesus is not identified by his attire or by using Christian symbols, but love. His command is to ‘love another’.
Dear departed Brother D. G. S. Dinakaran, whose motto was ‘love and compassion’, was once taken to visit heaven during his lifetime. There he saw three huge pillars. It represented three people that God had used on earth for His kingdom works. Under one pillar, it was written D. G. S. Dinakaran and the word LOVE. He is thus called the ‘apostle of love’ as was the apostle John.
Illustration: Let us imagine a hospital. There is a huge lighted board displaying the name, there are ambulances parked on the side, it has the latest technology in machines, well-trained staff, etc. But these are not what makes a hospital what it is, but when people with ailments come in and are treated.
Similarly, it is when believers work in love that they become true disciples of Jesus. The devil strives to break this work of love.
Love is sacrificial, not selfish. Romans 5: 8 – ‘but God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us’. John 15: 13 – ‘Greater love has no one than this , that someone lay down his life for his friends’. Love gives when it is not deserved.
Love fulfills God’ Law. Romans 13: 10 – ‘Love does not harm another’. Therefore, love is the fulfilment of God’s Law. Matt. 22: 37 - 39. This is the first and last commandment. And second is to love your neighbour as yourself. If this love is in you, you will not kill, you will not steal, you will not give false witness, you will not covet others’ property.
Love drives out fear and division. 1 John 4: 18 – ‘there is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear’. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. Fear divides, love unites. As a tiny light shown into a dark room drives away the darkness, so also when the love of God fills our heart, all fear leaves.
Love is eternal. 1 Cor. 13: 8 – ‘Love never fails’. Everything else will pass, but love lasts forever. Let us yearn to be filled with the love of God.
God bless you all
