Hebrews Chapter 9: Part 7 The Will Has Been Written for You | Hebrews 9 (Part 7)
08 December, 2021
Hebrews 9:16- In the case of a will, it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living. This is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood. When Moses had proclaimed every command of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves, together with water, scarlet wool and branches of hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people. He said, “This is the blood of the covenant, which God has commanded you to keep.” In the same way, he sprinkled with the blood both the tabernacle and everything used in its ceremonies. In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
1. In the case of a will, it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it. After one’s demise, we require the death certificate of that person from the government office as a proof of his/her death for various matters like bank loan, property related stuff, etc. In some cases, they even ask for the legal heirship certificate. All of this is essential for an appropriate handover/ transaction – death certificate and legal heirship certificate.
2. A will is in force only when somebody has died. During the Communist Regime in Russia, while a group gathered in the underground church, somebody betrayed and passed the information to police. One person in the group got a word of wisdom while praying and so he quickly ran to the Policemen and said, ‘Sir, our elder brother died and the whole family has gathered to read the will paper and sort the matters and partition accordingly.’ The policemen were convinced and they spared that gathering believing what the man had said. Did the man lie to the police? NO! What he said was 100% true – Our elder brother Lord Jesus died and we have his will paper – the New Covenant in hand!!
3. It never takes effect while the one who made it is living. Therefore, Jesus had to die for the testament/ the will/ the covenant to be in effect. We all think that Jesus died due to Judas’ betrayal, but there were many mysterious reasons for His death. The One who made the Law died so that the blood covenant that He wrote would have eternal validity.
4. If Jesus did not die, then the gospel is null and void. It would have been ineffective.
For example, Matthew 25 states the parable of the ten virgins, etc and Matthew 26 has recorded the Last Supper, the betrayal of Jesus and the incidents thereafter till the last chapter of the gospel – Matthew 28. What would it have been if the gospel of Matthew ended with chapter 25 and the other three gospels also came to a close without the Lord’s prayer, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus?
Even today, many are trying to come up with new teachings and ideas to prove that Jesus did not die, because the devil very well knows that the will has scope after Jesus’ death and so he’s trying to lead people away from the message of the Cross.
But the history and the Word of God powerfully and clearly promulgates that Jesus died and therefore we have an inheritance in Him that’s revealed in the Will paper that’s handed to us – You are an heir of God and a co-heir with Christ who has access to all heavenly gifts and blessings!
We do hear of several news stories where relatives change the will paper of the deceased and take away the inheritance from the deserved ones. The devil tries to do the same in the spiritual realm and I pray that today, each of you would have a clear picture of what God has in store for you, here on Earth and in eternity!
This is why it’s important to believe and confess the death and resurrection of Lord Jesus!
5. This is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood. Animals were killed in the first covenant as a shadow of the Lamb of God who was to come, die and establish the will.
6. Moses sprinkled the blood on the scroll and all the people, the tabernacle and everything used in its ceremonies. In short, after a sacrifice a person who goes to the Tent of Meeting to worship would return with the sacrificial blood sprinkled on them. The Old testament/ the first covenant / the old customs are all got to do with blood and in the New covenant, it’s all got to do with Jesus’ blood. Any will and every will comes into effect only with the death /the shedding of blood.
7. In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
Leviticus 17:11 – For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for your souls upon the altar; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul
Leviticus 17:14 – For the life of all flesh is its blood. Therefore I have told the Israelites, ‘You must not eat the blood of any living thing, because the life of all flesh is its blood; whoever eats it must be cut off.’
Though the old covenant forbids the consumption of blood, the New covenant demands everyone who believes in Jesus to eat from His flesh and drink from His blood. This is the foundational principle of God’s dealing with men. The shedding of Jesus’ blood is God’s answer to man’s problem of sin.
In the old testament, while the blood made an atonement – a covering for sin the New Testament – the blood covenant gives a permanent solution for sin!
