The Applied Word of God - Part 11
In Psalm 23 and John chapter 10 we see that if the Lord is your shepherd, he will lead you and take you to green pastures and provide you with what you need. How He feeds us is through the Word of God. Without this, our spiritual life dies.
We saw in the last few days that the Word of God is a sword, penetrating into our lives and working in us. We also saw that God’s Word always gets fulfilled, it can cut hearts, it can work in our lives like water by washing us, it is like honey: tasty and good, it is a light unto our path, it works like a seed that can be sown and harvested, and much more!
Jeremiah 23:29 “Is not my word like fire,” declares the Lord, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?”
The word of God can also work like fire!
We know that every house needs fire in some form to cook, warm things, or to consume unwanted waste. The Word of God has all these characteristics.
Words can set hearts on fire.
In Luke 24, we see the disciples walking away sadly as their Master wasn't with them anymore. They were waiting for the restoration of Jerusalem, but instead they saw Jesus crucified. On their way, they spoke to a stranger about the news. This person then began to speak from the Scriptures about what was prophesied about the Messiah. On hearing this, their hearts were ‘burning’.
Luke 24:32 “They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?””
Many of our spiritual lives are in a cold state. When the fire from the Word enters us, it can set our hearts on fire. God is a consuming fire and He is looking for flammable believers!
One property of this fire is zeal, passion, or enthusiasm. It means that when we are on fire for the Lord, we cannot sit still! We are constantly passionate and pursuing God.
