This Can Be Your Story - Part 23
Job 8:7
“Your beginnings will seem humble, so prosperous will your future be.”
It’s not your beginning, but it’s your future that matters. When we live according to God’s plan for us, He ensures a good future.
In Genesis 43, we see that Joseph’s brothers come to see him again. They bring him gifts and fall at his feet.
Genesis 43:27-28
“He asked them how they were, and then he said, “How is your aged father you told me about? Is he still living?” They replied, “Your servant, our father is still alive and well.” And they bowed down, prostrating themselves before him.”
The vision he saw was being fulfilled!
When Joseph saw his own brother Benjamin, he was deeply moved and he wept in his private room. Joseph was a very important man in Egypt but he had a compassionate heart. Jesus, though God showed compassion to the people. Whatever position we are in, our hearts must always be kind and compassionate.
Lunch was then served; the Egyptians ate separately.
Genesis 43:34
“When portions were served to them from Joseph’s table, Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as anyone else’s. So they feasted and drank freely with him.”
What was happening here? The brothers did not understand anything.
Genesis 44:1
“Now Joseph gave these instructions to the steward of his house: “Fill the men’s sacks with as much food as they can carry, and put each man’s silver in the mouth of his sack. 2 Then put my cup, the silver one, in the mouth of the youngest one’s sack, along with the silver for his grain.” And he did as Joseph said.”
Joseph gave to his brothers food for free out of his love for them. Joseph’s heart was tender and compassionate and God honoured him as he feared the Lord and always obeyed God. God looks at our heart. God lifts up those who exalt Him.
But he also plants a silver cup in one of the sacks. He was wise; wisdom is more precious than rubies! We need to have godly wisdom to handle life.
Once the brothers left, Joseph’s steward followed them and accused them of taking Joseph’s cup. They knew they had not done the same and said that if the cup is found with them, that brother will die! The steward agreed and said he will take that brother as a slave.
Genesis 44:12-13
“Then the steward proceeded to search, beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest. And the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack. At this, they tore their clothes. Then they all loaded their donkeys and returned to the city.”
God brings around justice in His time. They were all taken back to Joseph. The brothers were reaping all the evil they had sowed into Joseph’s life.
They were totally broken when the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.
Genesis 44:14-15
Joseph was still in the house when Judah and his brothers came in, and they threw themselves to the ground before him. Joseph said to them, “What is this you have done? Don’t you know that a man like me can find things out by divination? ”
The brothers again bowed down in front of Joseph. Joseph insisted that the one in whose sack the cup was found would be his slave. The brothers tried their best to convince Joseph why they couldn’t do so.
Genesis 44:20
“And we answered, ‘We have an aged father, and there is a young son born to him in his old age. His brother is dead, and he is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.’”
We will see Joseph’s story in the coming passages but we can learn that no matter the twists and turns in our life, God will always bring about His justice and fulfil His promises in our lives.
