Cast Out The Spirit Of Fear
1 Corinthians 1:9
‘God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.’
1 John 3:1
‘See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.’
God has lavished His love on us.
In the book of Luke we have read many times about the prodigal son who squanders his father’s wealth. When actually it is the story of the father who has lavished his love on his son. We have a father whose love has no bounds.
Whatever may come against us, God's love covers it all. The Father's love is the best cure for all your problems. Live inside the shell of the Father’s love and nothing can ever harm you.
2 Timothy 1:7
‘For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.’
Paul writes this book during a time when the churches are persecuted for following Christ. Timothy was a pastor in the church of Ephesus and within the church itself many people were scattered and had gone away from the teaching.
Timothy, a high-profile person, was wanted by those who were persecuting the churches of God. His life was threatened. And it was during this time Paul writes to him saying - God’s Spirit gives us power.
Many people when they are afraid, they are not able to concentrate on other things and start shivering. Yes there are many chemical reactions taking place in your body when you get stressed or scared but there is a spirit of fear that is working behind it.
How do you cancel the spirit of fear? By using the spirit of love, power and self-discipline. The Holy Spirit is not a weak spirit. It is powerful.
Even if you are not bold or confident, the minute the Holy Spirit comes into you, you are transformed. The spirit of boldness and courage comes into you.
The best example: Peter, Andrew, and the rest of the 9 disciples. They were all afraid of the consequences that they would have to face once Jesus was crucified. During Jesus’ trial, Peter openly declared that he did not know who Jesus was. They were all in hiding.
But when the Holy Spirit came, the doors opened. They did not remain in hiding anymore. Nothing could stop them. They started preaching the good news to the same people they were once hiding from. Hallelujah! What a transformation!
Acts 2:1-4
‘When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.’
Acts 4:13
‘When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.’
The Holy Spirit is the source of boldness and courage. To cancel out the spirit of fear, there comes another spirit with 3 characteristics.
1 John 4:18
‘There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.’
Our understanding about the perfect love of the Father drives out all fear inside of us. The spirit of fear will torment you even in your dreams. There will be a constant worry inside of you. But when the Holy Spirit comes, all that is driven away and you will find peace and rest.
Romans 8:15
‘The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”’
Everyday when you pray, begin your prayer by saying ‘Abba Father’, ‘my heavenly father’. You need to declare it everyday - I am a child of God. I am the son/daughter of God.
God did not give us a spirit of slavery but the spirit of sonship. We are the sons and daughters of the Most High.
Summary
We are the sons and daughters of the Most High. We need to have this conviction and not just limit it to mere words that we believe when we feel like it. The perfect love of Christ drives out all fear and that is the only way we can be bold and courageous.
