A New Era Is Beginning In Your Life
The book of Isaiah is known as the gospel in the Old Testament as there’s no other prophetic book that has Messianic content. It is also known as the mini Bible as it has 66 chapters and the Bible comprises 66 books in total. The first 39 chapters in the book of Isaiah are a briefing of the Old Testament and it dictates God’s approach towards sin, whereas the latter 27 chapters are an essence of the New Testament and begins with the prophecy of John the Baptist’s ministry followed by Jesus’ ministry, crucifixion, resurrection, and even about the new heaven and new earth. This week our focus will be on Isaiah 61.
Isaiah 61:1-3
The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn,
The above verses state the various aspects of Jesus’ ministry. This starts a new era when Jesus reads this portion of the Scripture and says that it is fulfilled in Him (Luke 4. 18-21).
Isaiah 61:4-5
and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor. They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated; they will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations. Strangers will shepherd your flocks; foreigners will work your fields and vineyards.
We’ll be looking into these verses bit by bit this week; but what great hope does this Scripture give us.
Isaiah 61:6-9
And you will be called priests of the Lord, you will be named ministers of our God. You will feed on the wealth of nations, and in their riches you will boast. Instead of your shame you will receive a double portion, and instead of disgrace you will rejoice in your inheritance. And so you will inherit a double portion in your land, and everlasting joy will be yours. “For I, the Lord, love justice; I hate robbery and wrongdoing. In my faithfulness I will reward my people and make an everlasting covenant with them. Their descendants will be known among the nations and their offspring among the peoples. All who see them will acknowledge that they are a people the Lord has blessed.”
Isaiah 61:10-11
I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations.
If we take the context, the above verses are glad tidings to the people of Israel who were slaves in Babylon back then. They had no political freedom, freedom to worship, and didn't have their own home/land. They lived as refugees. However, some were involved in business and progressed in life. It was in such a time as this that they received good news ‘from the Lord’ that they had a future. They were dignified by the Lord as the people of God. Many people consider ministers of God to live a miserable life. But that’s not true, because God the Father desires His children to live in His blessing. However, they may have to endure sufferings for the sake of the gospel and the Name of Jesus. Even Jesus went through such insults and sufferings.
John 15:20
Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.
God has given us the status of a child of God and we need to live in that standard. We go into captivity due to the ignorance of our calling and the privileges in Christ Jesus.
Hosea 4:6
my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.
People perish not due to lack of power or help from God or because God is against them; but due to lack of knowledge. Godly wisdom is gained through the Word and a deep longing for the same.
Proverbs 9:10
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Deuteronomy 28 mentions the blessings God gave the people of Israel in the first fourteen verses.
Deuteronomy 28:1-2
“Now if you faithfully obey the voice of the LORD your God and are careful to follow all His commandments I am giving you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. And all these blessings will come upon you and overtake you, if you will obey the voice of the LORD your God:
God had originally planned to position them above all nations; but they were now slaves to the Babylonians. And through Isaiah God spoke to His people that He was going to set the captives free, and restore their power and position such that other nations would serve them. So great was God's promise to them and Isaiah 61 speaks about their restoration. Though this was prophesied over the Babylonians slaves, in Luke 4:18 we see Jesus taking this Scripture portion and reading it out loud in the synagogue.
Luke 4:21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
We’ll be meditating further on this chapter throughout the week. Stay blessed!
