Unbelievable News

Isaiah 61:1-2
‘’The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.
Jesus’ ministry was of seven different types.
Prophet Isaiah is giving us a picture of what is going to happen when Christ comes.
‘proclaim good news to the poor’ - suppose you go to the home of a person who is struggling financially and is afraid of what the debtors have planned against him and tells him that all his debts are cleared and he has enough money in his bank account for him and his family to live for a very long time. What would that person do? Would he still be worried about how he will survive? No. His life would immediately change and he would be set free. Isaiah says, it is the same when Jesus comes.
‘ to proclaim freedom for the captives’ - let's consider another scenario. A person has been given a life sentence for committing a crime. You go to that prisoner and tell him that he has been forgiven and you have sanctioned his release, what would the prisoner immediately do? Wouldn’t his life change? A life that he thought would be hopeless suddenly has meaning and hope. He can start anew. This is the picture Isaiah is trying to show us. When Christ comes, He will set the captives free.
