Is Your Health Declining?
After the Old Testament came the New Testament, time and seasons have changed but some things are forever and do not change. E.g. According to the Old Testament there is gravitational force. Now we have the New Testament, so is the gravitational force still around? Of course yes. Similarly, in the Old Testament if people sinned they would die, but now we have the New Testament. Does that mean we can go on sinning? Be it Old or New, the wages of sin are death. Old or New, if someone lives in sin, the enemy gets a hold of that person and he has to face the consequences. Some life principles are forever.
As I said earlier, we live in a physical world and so we need God’s blessings and prosperity.
3 John 2
Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.
This verse speaks of spirit, soul and body. An elder of the Church, the Apostle John speaks about God’s blessing and prosperity in all the areas of our life, i.e. blessing for our spirit, our soul and also for the body. He mirrors God’s will through his blessing.
More than material prosperity, what matters is health. If we have money, but no health, it is of no use to us. We see in the book of Job, the enemy took permission from God and harmed Job’s health. But God restored him and made him healthy again.
2 Kings 5:1
Now Naaman was commander of the army of the king of Aram. He was a great man in the sight of his master and highly regarded, because through him the Lord had given victory to Aram. He was a valiant soldier, but he had leprosy.
God healed Naaman, the commander of the king’s army who was afflicted with leprosy. Good health is better than money. There is a generally accepted fact regarding the decline of health as one grows older. Weakness, different illnesses tend to pop up with age and this seems to be the accepted norm.
Ecclesiastes 12:1-7
Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, “I find no pleasure in them”— before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars grow dark, and the clouds return after the rain; when the keepers of the house tremble, and the strong men stoop, when the grinders cease because they are few, and those looking through the windows grow dim; when the doors to the street are closed and the sound of grinding fades; when people rise up at the sound of birds, but all their songs grow faint; when people are afraid of heights and of dangers in the streets; when the almond tree blossoms and the grasshopper drags itself along and desire no longer is stirred. Then people go to their eternal home and mourners go about the streets. Remember him—before the silver cord is severed, and the golden bowl is broken; before the pitcher is shattered at the spring, and the wheel broken at the well, and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.
Before you grow old remember and call upon the Lord in your youth.
2 Samuel 21:15-17
Once again there was a battle between the Philistines and Israel. David went down with his men to fight against the Philistines, and he became exhausted. And Ishbi-Benob, one of the descendants of Rapha, whose bronze spearhead weighed three hundred shekels[a] and who was armed with a new sword, said he would kill David. But Abishai son of Zeruiah came to David’s rescue; he struck the Philistine down and killed him. Then David’s men swore to him, saying, “Never again will you go out with us to battle, so that the lamp of Israel will not be extinguished.”
David fought Goliath in his youth but he couldn't fight in his old age.
Psalm 92:14
They (the righteous) will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green
In the above Psalm, we read a story different from what we just heard. There are two such men in the Bible who did not grow weak with age like other men did.
One of them was Moses.
Deuteronomy 34:7
Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone.
Even at the age of one hundred and twenty, Moses climbed a mountain, he was strong and his eyesight did not fade.
The second person is Caleb.
Joshua 14:10-11
“Now then, just as the Lord promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old! I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then.
We must pray, yes, but not prayer alone. We must look after our health, exercise, eat good food, nurture and care for our body. What you pass through your body has an effect on it. When we look after ourselves, then we will have physical prosperity.
1 Corinthians 3:16-17
Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.
Our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and it is our duty to look after this temple. Indulging in smoking, drinking and such habits damages our body and the one who destroys God’s temple, God destroys that person. Divine health is an aspect of divine prosperity.
