Is God Really Good?

Often we have our doubts if God is really good. When you see an overwhelming degree of negativity or disaster mounds around you, it is possible to question the goodness of the Lord. We often think, why is God not stopping this monstrosity? Why is he allowing this calamity? Why is he silent in our pain? As humans we all tend to think this way from time to time. 

Mark 10:18 says, ‘“Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone.’

Jesus says here that no one other than God is good.

Several years ago, we started a gathering of people on Sundays to share the word, and every Sunday the number of people attending would slowly increase. On one such Sunday, I said, ‘if you have any testimonies to share, now is your time to share it’. One man stood up and said, “I came into faith several years ago, and in these years since I’ve been in faith, my life has only seen disaster after disaster, pain after pain, with nothing good in my life. He has not done anything good in my life.” Saying this the man burst out crying. I panicked seeing this, as several new people came to attend the service that day. I strictly asked the brother to sit down. That day after the sermon, I spoke to this man and I realized the main problem in his household was that marriages were not taking place. If I remember correctly that man had siblings whose weddings were not happening. Many people blamed his faith for his siblings' predicament. They often said, if you had continued to live the way you were expected to, then these weddings would have taken place as per the norms, with people in the community. That day, he was burdened by these disheartening words of people around him. When I heard it, in my heart I was stubborn to bring out a change in the man’s household. I decided I would pray to God to change the situation in the man’s household. I even proclaimed that every Saturday there would be prayers taking place. I urged everyone to bring their prayer requests to me and I asked them to write in a notebook the day they asked for a specific prayer and the day they received it. Every Saturday we would pray in tongues, filled by the Holy Spirit. We would often pray from morning till evenings. After a while, when I looked at the notebook with the prayer requests and dates, I realised that several prayers were being answered and the dates under ‘when I received the blessing’ column started getting filled. I was excited to see it. If I remember correctly, within the next few months, the man’s siblings all got married. Sometimes we expect certain things to happen and do not do our part, such as pray in this case. The same man who was crying, a few months ago, started proclaiming miraculous testimonies. I then started seeing goodness in my own life. God is good. If you live in the truth, as a righteous person, lean on Him and believe that He is good, big blessings will come your way.

The goodness of God is the foundation of everything and in essence God is good. In the book of Genesis in Chapter 1, we see God is creating the world as we know it and after each of his creations he says ‘and it was good’. After he created man, he said it’s not good for a man to be alone and so he created a partner for him thereby creating Eve for Adam. It is important you understand God is good and that He does only good. Knowing that ‘there is no evil in God and that He does only good’ will be the foundation of your faith. 

James 1:17 says, ‘Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.’

Every good and perfect gift is from above and know that a good heart, will only give good things. A person with an evil heart cannot do good things. And our God has a big, loving, good and generous heart. Jesus is a good gift from our Heavenly Father; the Holy Spirit, all spiritual gifts are a gift from God. The clothes we wear, the air we breathe, the water we drink, the house we live in, the food we eat etc  are all gifts from God. We often compare ourselves to others and think of everything we lack. 

We learn three things from the above verse.

1. Everything good that we have has come from God.
2. God is the father of light. There is no darkness or evil in God
3.  He is unchanging. God was good centuries back and He is still good even after man sinned. God is good all the time. 

1 Corinthians 15: 33-34 says, ‘Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” Come back to your senses as you ought, and stop sinning; for there are some who are ignorant of God—I say this to your shame.’

Bad company maligns goodness and good character. Some people have no connection with God, it is important to not sway based on the comments of certain atheists, philosophers etc. There is both good and bad in this world. Know that anything bad that happens in your life is not from God. The world we currently reside in is not perfect. The whole world is under the control of the evil one and God protects those who love him and are righteous is his sight. When we know this foundational truth that is God is good and He will only do good in our life, it will bring deliverance in our lives.
