Seekers Shall Find The Saviour (Christmas Special)
Genesis 3:15 says, ‘And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”’
As you read Genesis chapter 3, man disobeys God and does what he is not supposed to do. Man and God become separated and God curses everyone. In between all the curses, God proclaims a promise. This promise shows the fatherhood in God. A father disciplines his child in love. While man is being disciplined, God tells the serpent who deceived man, ‘I will create an enmity between you and the woman and between your offspring and hers.’ Which means that the child of the woman will strike their heel on the serpent. Amidst this war, God gives a hope in the form of a promise.
It is specified here - the child of the woman which essentially means the birth of Jesus which we celebrate as Christmas. Research shows that as per the Abrahamic calendar, Jesus was born on the first day of the month of Nissan which as per our calendar is around March 20th or so and not December 25th. But the fact is that Jesus was born though the exact date may not be known accurately.
In the book of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and even in the writings of the historian Josephus there is concrete evidence that Jesus was born and it was a unique birth. It was a unique birth because a virgin was with child without the intervention of a man. Jesus was thus born and certain things happened after Jesus was born in Bethlehem as per the prophecy. After He was born, there were several celestial signs such as the appearance of a star in the sky. These celestial signs came about because until then, such a miracle did not take place.
Matthew 2:1 says, ‘After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem’
From the east came the Magi, which is today’s Iraq. When they arrived at Bethlehem, they started searching for the newborn King. They followed the star while in search of the King.
Who’s this Magi?
In ancient times, Magus meant magician. In the times of the Kings, when they were in deep trouble, the King's palace usually had appointed magicians to help. We see this in the story of King Pharaoh, who called on the magicians in his palace to interpret his dream. Among them a lot were part of occult and witchcraft.
In Babylon as well, the King used several of these magicians in times of need. For instance, Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were appointed by the King to help him in his governance. Apart from them, there were several magicians/wise men that were also part of the King’s court. They were often very advanced in astronomy, mathematics, history, geography, administration, agriculture and such. Kings usually deferred to their guidance when making certain decisions. When Daniel was appointed at the King's court, he was the ‘Chief of the Magi’. The reason why he was in such a top position was not because he possessed magic, but because he had the Spirit of the Lord on him. As written in the scriptures, Daniel was a captive and under the guidance of leaders such as Nehemiah, many were brought back after 70 years. However some people chose to stay back, as they flourished in their businesses. It is those stayed back who were called the Magi.
Numbers 24:17 says, ‘I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel. He will crush the foreheads of Moab, the skulls of all the people of Sheth.’
Micah 5:2 says, ‘But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for someone who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times’
The magi or the wise men took into account all these aspects and it is those who are wise that seek God.
King Herod was a very evil man and had several wives and children and in fact he killed a few of his own kids to ensure that he did not lose the throne. When he heard the news that the King was born, he was immediately stunned and insecure. When these Magi found Jesus they brought gifts that are representative of Jesus. It is believed that 3 wise men visited Jesus at the manger, but the fact is we don’t know that for sure. All we know is that they brought three kinds of gifts, which included gold, frankincense, and myrrh. In fact it was a whole fleet that came to visit Jesus with several camels and other things that were needed for the journey.
One reason why they came all the way to see Jesus was because they knew the Word and the prophecies. They also had a heart that yearned to know the creator. There was an intention behind this huge fleet coming all the way to Bethlehem to see Jesus. They came to worship the King Of Jews, the Son of Man. King Herod tried to kill and stop the Magi but the Lord protected them and the star guided them.
The lessons we can learn from the journey the Magi took is that -
1. The seekers of the Saviour shall find him.
2. The seekers of the Saviour will be guided by God.
3. The worshipers of the Saviour will be preserved and blessed.
4. Those who find the Saviour will walk in new ways. God gave the Magi a dream to not return to King Herod, thus saving their lives. Once we meet Jesus, we cannot go back to our old ways. Jesus is the light of the world and we must follow this light .
Romans 10:9 says, ‘If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.’
