Tranquillity in Turbulent waters
Psalm 91 and Psalm 46 are two psalms that have given great peace and comfort to many people especially during covid times. The Word of God comforts us and strengthens in times of need.
Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow
The Word of God has life in it.. The Bible is the living word. All other books are dead, they share information and wisdom but there is no life in it.
John 6.63 says “The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life.”
Psalm 46:1-3
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.
God is our refuge and ever present help in any troubling situation. We have no reason to fear if we are aware that the Lord who created heaven and earth is with us.
In Matthew 8.22-27, amidst a great turbulent storm, the presence of Jesus in the boat saved the disciples from drowning.
John 14:1-4
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”
Most of us live in a troubled state and the above words of Jesus were to such people. A few hours after saying this we see that Jesus Himself was troubled in Gethsemane. All the troubles in our hearts and pain were transferred to Him. We don’t have to carry them anymore. Jesus took it away for us. He is an ever present helper in times of trouble.
We know the story of Hagar whom Abraham had to send out of his house. They ran out of food and water and Hagar began to cry out. She didn’t notice the well of water that had appeared right in front of her.
Genesis 21:19
Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.
Sometimes when we are troubled, we fail to see the blessings that are right in front of us.
John 14:27
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
One of the things Jesus left here on earth was His “peace”. This promise of “Peace” is only available to those who believe in the “Prince of Peace”. Jesus knows that situations will come in our life that try to take away our peace but He speaks in advance to such people that He would take care of everything.
Jesus went through many trials in His life on earth; He went through much more than any of us ever have. He suffered physically and emotionally. It is this Jesus who tells us not to be troubled.
Whatever you are going through, it is temporary. It is only for a season, it will pass. Jesus was on the Cross for six hours and His pre Calvary phase was also very painful. Because Jesus knows what earthly troubles are like, He knows how to comfort us and give us the grace and peace to handle it.
Our situation doesn’t need to change for us to experience His perfect peace; a peace that surpasses all understanding.
