Staying In Humility Exalts You
James 4:6
But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”
Humility is very important to God. It attracts God’s blessings in our life. True worship and prayer in Spirit and Truth to God comes from having humility and knowing that you need God in every step. In Revelation 4:10, we read “the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne”
Humility makes us good soil to bear fruit. Lack of humility brings about humiliation.
The 4 principles of humility that we have learnt so far is as follows:
1) Humility is essential for blessing.
2) Humility is fertile and fruitful.
3) Humility, if not careful, may give birth to pride.
4) Lack of humility brings about humiliation.
Today, we focus on the 5th principle.
5. Staying in humility brings exaltation.
Genesis 16:9-10
Then the angel of the LORD told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.” The angel added, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”
Without this angel’s intervention, Hagar would have been completely alone in her pregnancy with no one to care for her. The angel told her to go back to Sarah and be humble where God had placed her. Submitting to authorities brings blessings.
This is why Paul says in Ephesians 5.22 that wives should submit to their husbands. There is a great blessing that comes with it. For Hagar to receive her blessings, she had to go back to her Mistress Sarah and submit to her. It was because Hagar despised Sarah that she was sent to the desert.
Pride blocks a lot of blessings. If we can fully prostrate at God’s feet in humility, He will lift us up.
Matthew 23:12
Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
James 4:10
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
Anyone that looks to people or the world for exaltation, will be disappointed. If we realise that we just need God’s favour and exaltation, He can lift us up truly. No one can bring down those whom God has exalted.
Proverbs 18:12
Before a downfall the heart is haughty, but humility comes before honour.
Before a person is honoured, he has to become humble. Mordecai is known as a father figure and a model character because of his humility and duty to His people. He was exalted because of his humility unlike Haman who was brought to death because he exalted himself.
Psalms 25:9
He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way.
God leads the humble! We should be willing to humble ourselves and stay in humility. God will then lead and guide us and exalt us in His time. We will not make mistakes.
William Carey, a cobbler by profession in the UK had a burden to come to India from the Holy Spirit. He used to pray over a map of India while mending shoes. God brought him to India and used him to translate the Bible into 24 Indian languages and influence people to end many social evils. He was once humiliated by a person who made fun of him by calling him a “Shoe Maker” to which he said that he was not even a shoe maker but a poor cobbler who mended shoes. God blessed his humility and exalted him in Government circles in India. This is an example to all of us. It must be God who exalts us; not people or we ourselves.
