A Call For Holiness
The primary reason for our existence is to worship God. Even though we discussed this last week, I just want to remind you again that worshiping God is not merely singing songs and clapping hands. It’s about worshipping our Lord in Spirit and in truth.
Today we focus on holiness. There is a big call for holiness. Worship is directly connected to holiness. Worship is not just singing songs, it’s not a performance, it’s not a talent show, it’s not a concert, it’s not smoke machines or loud music. While all this can be a part of worship, it’s not worship in itself. But these in itself are not worship. Music moves God but true worship moves God.
Romans 12:1-2 says, ‘Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.’
The whole body should be involved in worship where you are a living sacrifice for God. If you live by the ways of the world you will not be able to offer a sacrificial worship pleasing to God.
In the Old Testament, sacrifices involved killing a living animal. In the New Testament, God is asking us to offer a living sacrifice. We should have a new life in Christ to worship him. Christ died for us, so now we don’t have to die. In him we have a new life. It’s offering one’s whole life to God which is true worship. Live every minute of everyday as an offering to God. Paul says worship is not happening in a building, but in your heart and soul every moment of the day.
Hebrews 13:15 says, ‘Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name.’
Our God is asking you to praise and worship him continually, every minute of the day. Let your existence praise God. When you are travelling, praise the Father. When you eat, praise the Father.
In all things you do, praise the Father everyday with your lips. In the New Testament, the sacrificial place is not a building, but your lips.
1 Peter 2:5 says, ‘you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.’
Jesus is the way, the truth and life and anybody who wants to go to the Father can only go through Jesus. Our praises and worship to God will only go through Jesus. Your lips are today’s sacrificial offering, so continually worship the Lord.
We should always focus on the things above and not earthly things. When we think of the things above, our mind and our spiritual journey will be elevated which in turn means we place more trust and hope in God.
James 4:8-10 says, ‘8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.’ When we worship the Lord we should pull ourselves closer to him. And worship brings us closer and closer to God. Only when we pull ourselves closer to God does God pull himself to us. This also means there should be a deliberate effort to draw ourselves to God. Only then will he draw closer to us.
We should have a heart of repentance, because it is only if we repent and purify ourselves and rid ourselves of the sins of the world can we draw closer to God. Which is why holiness and worship are intertwined.
Since God is holy we should also be holy and a holy God must be worshipped in holiness. Your head, heart and hand must be holy when you come before the Lord. We should adorn a holy garment when we praise the Lord.
Psalm 24:3-4 says, ‘3 Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? 4 The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god.’
Joshua tells the people of Israel to consecrate themselves before the Lord. When we commit to a life of holiness, God will do amazing things. Worship means holy and the one who worships the holy God must also be holy. God will not accept an unholy worship
