Preparing For Worship
Anybody from any walk of life and any religion dutifully prepares themselves before they worship their god. Just imagine how much we should prepare ourselves to praise our God Almighty.
Worshiping is the employment of the redeemed. Worshipping God is not a chore and not a mundane task. It shouldn’t be doubled down as a religious service or a traditional ritualistic act. Rather a time of enjoyment as you worship and glorify the Lord. There is enjoyment and pleasure in worshipping God. It is out of gratitude and not a forced activity as we are eternally indebted to God for redemption and his mercies.
We will worship the Lord even after we leave this world. When we enter the heavens we will worship the Father and take part in the tasks assigned to us.
So how should we prepare to worship God? And what are the prerequisites to worship God the right way?
Many people worship the right God in the wrong way. Some others worship the wrong God, the right way. We should learn to worship the right God the right way.
Following are the prerequisites to worship the right God the right way.
1. Repentance and Reconciliation
Wrong relationship with God or with man can hinder the flow of worship to God.
Psalm 66:17-18 says, ‘17 I cried out to him with my mouth; his praise was on my tongue. 18 If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened;
These are the conditions for the acceptance of our prayer and worship. God does not accept all prayers and worship including that of sinners. Jesus stands as the mediator between us and God the Father. He helps us reconcile with the Father when we go astray.
1 Timothy 2:5 says, ‘For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,’
The mediator acts as the person who resolves the conflict between both the parties. The mediator then must be someone who knows and is trusted by both the parties. In this case, the mediator must know both man and God. There is only one place who can take that place here and that is Jesus. He has in him divine nature and human nature. Hence it is important to have the right relationship with God and with man before you worship the Father.
Matthew 5:23-24 says, ‘23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.’
If you stand before God with the sacrifice of praise and then you realise that someone has something against you, then you keep the sacrifice at the altar and run to the concerned person and try to reconcile. God will not accept praises, if you are not in alignment with your loved ones. This verse makes you wonder how many of our prayers could have gone unanswered because we were not on good terms with our brothers and sisters.
1 John 4:20 says, ‘20 Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. 21 And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.’
In essence, our relationship with people affects our relationship with God. We must prepare for worship in order for that worship to be heard, listened to and received by God.
