Prepare Your Heart For Worship
We need to prepare our hearts before worship because God detests worship that does not come from the heart.
Matthew 15:8-9 “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.’’
When we speak with our mouths, it is often not our hearts that are speaking. The integrity of the heart is crucial when approaching God.
Hebrews 4:13 ‘Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.’
People may betray us, but there is One who will always remain faithful. God is grieved when people honor Him in vain. He declares that their hearts are far from Him. They come to Him with many words of praise, yet their actions reveal a different devotion.
Matthew 6:7 ‘And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.’
Reciting a memorized prayer repeatedly—10, 20, or even 50 times—is not what God desires. He does not seek ritualistic prayers filled with endless words.
When you pray and worship, you must connect to the Father’s heart. It should be a heart-to-heart experience, not meaningless repetition. Until a few years ago, some believed they needed to physically harm themselves to please God. But NO! Jesus has already borne the pain for us on the cross.
Hebrews 10:1 ‘The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship.’
In the Old Testament, many sacrifices were performed as a foreshadowing of what was to come. Worship was often expressed through physical actions. But in the New Testament, we worship God with our hearts, for our hearts are filled with the Holy Spirit—it is the true chamber of worship.
How do you engage your heart in worship? When you worship wholeheartedly, you are overwhelmed with joy and love, and sometimes even moved to tears. You are touched deeply and transformed.
2 Timothy 1:3 ‘I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers.’
Summary
Worship should come from the heart. God desires a genuine, heart-to-heart connection with us. True worship fills us with joy, love, and the presence of the Holy Spirit. Prepare your heart and worship Him sincerely!
