Worship in Song: The Role of Singing & Music
The secret of David reaching heights is his lifestyle of worship.
In 2 Samuel 23. 1, it is written “1 These are the last words of David:
“The inspired utterance of David son of Jesse, the utterance of the man exalted by the Most High, the man anointed by the God of Jacob, the hero of Israel’s songs:”
If we can truly worship God, we can also reach heights. The quality of our life depends on which God we worship. If we worship the true God most high, we will live a high life. Our worship influences our life.
In the last few episodes we looked at different types of phases of worship from the Bible. While we all associate worship with singing and music, this is only one phase of worship and there are many more ways to worship God.
The ninth phase is singing and worship- you can sing psalms and hymns and songs that Glorify God. Music must be based on biblical truths and edify people. Not all music is good for worship. Some music is evil- it is from the enemy. Lucifer was in fact a musical angel while he was in heaven. After he fell down to the earth, Satan has been trying to hold the earthly music in his hand.
Ephesians 5:19 “speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord”
You can worship God by speaking to other people in songs! Mutual edification happens here.
Psalm 95:2 “Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song”
There are many churches now that teach that we should not use instruments or clap your hands while worshipping. But this is not what the Bible teaches us. We can even assume that God made music for two reasons- to worship Him and to make us glad. Music therapy exists!
Nevertheless, music has a very significant part in worshipping God.
Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.
The tenth phase connected to worship is water baptism. Baptism is a public act of obedience and an outward sign of the inward reality.
Romans 6 talks about the meaning of baptism. There are many types of baptism- of the Spirit, of the Word, and of water. Before water baptism, you become raised for a new life in Christ. When we are submerged in water it shows that we have died with Christ, when we come up out of the water, it shows we are raised up with Christ and enter a new life.
Matthew 28:18-20 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Acts 2:38
38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 6:3-4
3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
We don’t need to travel back in time to die with Christ, we just need to be baptised into His death and be raised up in a new life.
Baptism is no small event- it creates a spiritual connection and creates big changes in our spirit. The lordship over our lives changes and we receive new life.
Baptism is not conversion- there is absolutely no merit in this.
Baptism is a part of worship.
