The Peace Of God
Isaiah 9:6 says, ‘For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.’
This verse focuses on the birth of Jesus at Bethlehem. The government will be on his shoulders, he is ruler and the governance will be on his shoulder. He is also given several titles - Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
So essentially the ruler and counsellor is the same person. Usually a King‘s court will have several counsellors each specialising in an aspect of law who is able to counsel the king in the matters of his kingdom. In this case, Jesus himself is the counsellor and not just any counsellor but a wonderful counsellor. Jesus is also called a Mighty God and an Everlasting Father. Jesus is also the Prince of Peace. These titles were used to describe Jesus in relation to his coming to save the world.
When Jesus lived with us on Earth, he constantly said the words ‘I give you my peace’. The peace Jesus gives us is beyond what the world offers. He gives us HIS peace.
How does a person lose their peace?
I have observed that the most intense and painful way to lose peace is through broken relationships. When a husband and wife fights, there is no peace at home. When two friends fight, you lose your inner peace. Broken relationships are the root cause of losing peace. Man’s broken relationship begins with Adam, when he fell.
Genesis 3:8 says, ‘the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day’
What we can understand from the verse above is that the Lord used to walk with them and spent time with Adam and Eve in the evenings. There was friendship and comradeship between them and then they broke the Lord's commandment which led to a broken relationship with God which further led to man losing his peace. Jesus came to earth to reverse this brokenness and bring reconciliation.
2 Corinthians 5:18-20 says, ‘18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.’
Today, when sinners are brought to the righteous path, it’s called the ministry of reconciliation. The message of reconciliation is the good news - which is, the Lord has forgiven us all our sins if we believe in Christ. Jesus sacrificed himself on the cross of Calvary for us. He came to earth as the mighty Lord and Prophet and sacrificed himself so that we do not have to wear the brunt of sin. Jesus was crucified for us on the cross of Calvary. The cross has a vertical and a horizontal bar and he was pinned against the cross. He sacrificed himself on the cross as a sacrificial lamb, standing between the heavens and the earth to save his beloved creation from their sins. It is the sacrifice on
