Offence: The Silent Trap & Its Cure
This week, we begin a powerful new series titled “Offence & Its Remedy.”
Many people today are emotionally and mentally stuck—not because of a lack of opportunity or ability, but because of an offence they experienced in the past. When left unaddressed, offence becomes a spiritual trap that holds people back from living in the freedom God has for them.
What Is Offence?
In the original Greek, the word for offence is “skandalizo,” which means trap or snare. Offence causes someone to stumble emotionally or spiritually. It can be triggered by hurtful words, rude behavior, or actions that wound our pride or dignity. The emotional response that follows—hurt, anger, frustration—is what we call offence.
Offence can come from the people closest to us—family, friends, church members—and when not dealt with, it festers into bitterness, unforgiveness, resentment, hatred, and even a desire for revenge.
Offence Will Come—Be Ready
Jesus made it clear in Luke 17:1–4:
“Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come,
but woe to anyone through whom they come.”
Offence is inevitable. Whether through misunderstandings, correction, or outright wrongdoing, you will be offended at some point in your life.
But what you do next determines everything.
Jesus goes on to say:
“If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them.
Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back… you must forgive them.”
Offence isn't just about being hurt—it's about how we respond.
Correction Is Not Offence
It’s important to recognize that godly correction is not the same as offence. When a spiritual elder, mentor, or leader uses the Word of God to correct or discipline you, it’s for your growth—not to hurt you.
If your heart is easily offended by truth, you may miss the very wisdom that could heal you.
We Live in a World Full of Traps
We live in a fallen world, and offence is everywhere—in our homes, schools, workplaces, churches, and even marriages. And in these end times, offence is increasing.
Matthew 24:10 warns us:
“At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other.”
Offence is more than a personal problem—it's a prophetic sign of the last days.
It weakens relationships, divides churches, and causes people to drift away from faith.
This is Satan’s strategy—to trap you in offence so you stay stuck in unforgiveness and miss out on your destiny.
So What’s the Cure?
The remedy to offence is forgiveness, spiritual maturity, and guarding your heart.
Don't let bitterness take root. Recognize when offence tries to creep in, and deal with it quickly through prayer, repentance, and forgiveness.
Final Thought
You will face offence. But you don’t have to stay offended.
Choose to break free. Choose forgiveness. Choose healing.
Offence may be a silent trap, but God has given us the cure—His Word, His Spirit, and His peace.
