Beside Quiet Waters
Psalm 23:2 He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters.
The above verse implies that the Lord is our feeder and rest-giver. If we study the sheep nature, we’ll understand that they are not very intelligent animals. They are vulnerable and tire easily. They are defenseless, they aren’t fast runners. They cannot handle stress. They’re easily caught up in thorns.
Similarly, as humans, we easily get trapped in unwanted troubles. God considered humans as sheep without a shepherd. God sets the lonely in families, but instead of unity, there’s disharmony within families.
Ezekiel 34:5 So they were scattered because there was no shepherd, and when they were scattered they became food for all the wild animals.
Sheep is an intensive care animal. The sheep are short-sighted and can’t find pastures on their own. Israel moreover being a desert, the shepherds in those days had to walk miles in search of green pastures; and once found, the shepherds would return to their flock and lead them to that pasture.
Psalm 42:1 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.
Psalm 63:1 You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.
Humans too need a lot of care and that’s why we have pastors included in the five-fold ministry. God has placed His people purchased by His own blood under pastoral care all across the globe. The sheep are purchased and the shepherds are chosen by God.
1 Peter 1:18,19 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.
1 Timothy 3:2 Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach.
2 Timothy 4:1-4 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.
God is the feeder, but He has appointed many other feeders to feed His flock.
Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Isaiah 26:3 You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.
John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
