Purpose Driven Life

Purpose Driven Life
Living According to God’s Plan
Focus word: Purpose Driven Life
Focus verse: Philippians 1.21 – “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.”
Declaration: My life is driven by purpose; every breath counts for the glory of Christ.
Points to ponder
1. Christ is the center of our purpose
Paul summarizes his life in the statement – To live is Christ. The first half of his life was wasted away while the next half was Christ centered. Many live for their kids, some for their specific goals, some live for possessions and still some for recognition. But if we are Christ centered, then our problems can’t affect us or our eternal purpose. While all other purposes are earthly and temporary and eventually fade away, the eternal purpose remains – to live is Christ and to die is gain. Paul firmly resolved at Corinth – My consideration is only the crucified Christ.
In Galatians 2.20, Paul says, “… Christ lives in me.”
Colossians 3.4 – Christ is described as …. your life.
Romans 14.8 – “whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.”
Biblical purpose is not asking you what you want to accomplish in your life or what you hope to achieve because whatever we achieve or accomplish, will have to be abandoned here before we pass/move on. So then the real question should be – how can Christ be expressed through my life? Pastor Damien often says, we are the 5th gospel. Technically there are only 4 gospels but people will read us, our lives.
Just like the spokes of a wheel have a hub in the center, to revolve and rotate in perfect alignment, so too our lives should find its centre in Christ. When Christ is at the centre, every area of our life finds its proper place.
2. Purpose gives meaning to every season
Many live a meaningless life. Pastor Damien found meaning in life when he was 16. That was when he found Christ. In Philippians 1.12, Paul confirms that his imprisonment actually served to advance the gospel in spite of the hardships he had to suffer – low ceiling prison cell, and movement was restricted because he was perpetually chained to a Roman officer. Yet the Word of God was not chained.
2Corintians 4.17 states that the present troubles are producing an eternal glory that outweighs them.
Ecclesiastes 3.1 – There is a season for every activity under heaven. There is a fixed time. Paul understood that circumstances change but our God given purpose remains the same. You may serve God on a platform, or in a waiting room while at other times, you serve Him through visible achievements, and still sometimes through quiet faithfulness. Just as the pieces on a chess board are not permanent and they can be moved according to the player’s strategy, so too, God has a purpose which is unchangeable.
3. Purpose helps us decide what really matters
When you know the reason for living, then it becomes easier to prioritize what deserves your time and what does not. It helps or we would land up majoring in the minor and minoring in the major.
Acts 20.24 – I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task. No other purpose.
1 Corinthians 6.12 – Paul refused to be mastered by anything.
Ephesians 5.15-17 – live wisely, making the most of every opportunity and understanding the Lord’s will.
The importance of time management in life centers around understanding God’s will.
Psalm 90.12 – Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom. (Moses’ prayer)
Not everything that demands our attention deserves our attention!
4. Purpose looks beyond this life
To live is Christ, to die is gain. Paul says his purpose was larger than this existence.
2 Corinthians 5. 8-9 – Paul decided to please the Father whether at home or in the body of Christ – the church or even when away from it.
1 Corinthians 3. 13-14 – Our work will be ultimately tested and what endures will receive an award.
Revelation 14.13 – the deeds of those who die in the Lord will follow them. A purpose driven life asks – not only will they succeed; but will this matter in eternity?
