God’s Definition Of Success
Today we start a new series and we will focus on the 4 facets of victory. When we talk about people, we often say that this person is a successful sportsperson, businessman, doctor and such. We often characterise them as successful because they tend to be newsmakers. But the real question is, when you look at the totality of their lives, are they successful? Today, I will be talking about a well rounded success.
Our life’s success is not restricted to making it big in our professions. It is determined by your success in every area of your life and this success is rare and often requires diligent effort, faith and prayer. God is the designer of human life and human family and we will only have success if we go forward in our life according to God's plan. True success is valuable and requires dedicated efforts. Your effort to gain success should be consistent, persistent and god-guided.
Matthew 7:13-14 says, ‘13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.’
Many enter through this wide open door towards destruction. However, the doorway to life is narrow and not many enter through it. In fact, only a few people even find it. Many people prioritise worldly success over spiritual success. I had a very different worldview before having an encounter with Christ. I was focused on achieving great things in this world and I was driven by ambition. However, after I encountered Christ, my world view, my faith and ambitions changed. My ambition was replaced by vision as ambition was human while vision was from our God.
1 Corinthians 3:18-20 says, ‘18 Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become “fools” so that you may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness”; 20 and again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.”’
We measure everything in our lives as per the worldly standard. We look at their careers, their wealth, their houses etc. We assume that such a person is successful. However, that is not the case as they are only successful in one area of their lives. As clearly stated in verse 19, God's definition of wisdom is different from that of the world, for the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's eyes. God says the wisdom of the world is futile.
Jeremiah 29:11 says, ‘For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’
In the verse above God says, he knows the plans he has for each of us, which means that this plan is only known to God. His plans are to prosper us and not to harm us. This is such an encouraging verse for all of us. The foundation of the success of human life lies in this verse, which is to follow God's plan for us. Our success lies in finding his plan for us.
God's definition of success is rooted in his purpose, the peace that is given to us by him and the eternal value that comes with it.
Our lives revolve around educating ourselves, finding a job, then finding a partner, marrying them, having a baby and following the same steps along with them to give them a good life. But is this all our life supposed to be? God's divine design is to enjoy success in every area of our life and lead a wholesome life to transport us to eternity.
Our perspective on a successful life should not be restrained to our success on earth, but should ultimately focus on entering into eternity with Christ. In essence, allow God to define your success and not this world.
According to the scriptures the wholesome success of a person is spread across seven areas:
1. Spiritual growth
2. Mental growth
3. Health and wellness
4. Family life
5. Financial well-being
6. Relationships
7. Life’s mission
Only if a person is successful in the seven areas of life, enlisted above, can we consider their life as a success. If we follow God's plan for our life, then we will be able to succeed in each of these areas. The path he has laid out for you might not be easy, might be narrow, might not include too many people, but if you walk in and succeed, only then can you be considered as success or someone who’s led a successful life
