The Fruit Of The Spirit #2: Joy
We’re continuing our series on “The Fruit of the Spirit,” based on Galatians 5:22–23, where we learn about the nine expressions of the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives:
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
Though we often say “fruits,” the Bible refers to it as one fruit—just like an orange with many segments. All nine qualities come from the Holy Spirit, not human effort.
Last time, we looked at love. Today, we focus on the second fruit: JOY.
Joy: More Than a Feeling
What exactly is joy? It’s not the absence of problems. It’s not a temporary emotional high.
Joy is a supernatural delight—rooted in God’s presence, purpose, and promises.
“Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” – Nehemiah 8:10
This verse was spoken during a time of revival and conviction. It shows that joy and strength are connected. When you lose your joy, you lose your strength.
Joy Comes from the Spirit
“For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.” – Romans 14:17
The Holy Spirit is a Spirit of Joy. In Nehemiah’s day, the people were revived as they meditated on God’s Word—and it filled them with a joy that broke depression, sadness, and fear.
“The LORD your God... will rejoice over you with singing.” – Zephaniah 3:17
God is not distant or indifferent—He sings over you with joy. And when you are close to Him, that joy becomes yours.
Joy vs. Happiness
We are made of body, soul, and spirit:
The body craves pleasure.
The soul seeks happiness (based on circumstances).
The spirit needs joy (which is constant and unshakable).
Happiness depends on what happens. Joy depends on who God is.
Paul and Silas: Joy in Chains
One of the most powerful examples of joy is found in Acts 16:25:
“About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.”
They were wrongfully imprisoned, beaten, and chained—but their hearts were filled with joy, not despair. That joy led to a miraculous prison break and a powerful testimony that saved lives.
Why Joy Matters
Joy isn’t optional—it’s essential. Here’s why:
Joy is Strengthening
When you’re full of joy, you’re spiritually strong.
“The joy of the LORD is your strength.” – Nehemiah 8:10
Joy is Contagious
Joyful Christians testify even without speaking.
“A gloomy Christian is a contradiction in terms.” – Charles H. Spurgeon
Joy is Warfare
The enemy wants to steal your joy—because joyful believers are unstoppable.
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” – Philippians 4:4
Joy Comes from Intimacy with God, Not Information About Him!
“You will fill me with joy in your presence.” – Psalm 16:11
“My joy and delight may be in you… full measure, complete and overflowing.” – John 15:11 (AMPC)
Joy is not something you manufacture. It flows from being close to God.
Intimacy with God → Joy from God.
Joy in All Seasons
Even when life is hard, joy remains:
“Though the fig tree does not bud... yet I will rejoice in the LORD.” – Habakkuk 3:17–18
“Joy is not the absence of suffering, it is the presence of God.” – Elisabeth Elliot
Let Joy Be the Banner Over Your Life
There’s a song that says:
“Joy is the flag flown high from the castle of my heart when the King is in residence there.”
That’s exactly what joy looks like in the life of a believer. It’s a visible sign that Jesus lives in you—no matter the season.
Joy isn’t just for good days.
Joy is for every day—because God is with you every day.
Let the joy of the Lord rise up in you today.
