Excellence With God's Grace
The focus word for today is ‘Skill & Grace’.
The focus verse for today is Exodus 35:31 says, ‘and he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills’
The declaration for today is ‘The Holy Spirit anoints my hands with skill and my mind with creativity; I work with grace today.’
God Is The Source Of Every True Skill
The first person in the Scripture, specially said to be filled with the Spirit was not a prophet or a priest or a king, but a craftsman. A man who was capable of making things with his hands using his skill and creativity. God filled him with wisdom, understanding and knowledge to build the tabernacle. To give more context, Moses went atop Mount Sinai and God showed him a vivid image of a tabernacle. He commanded Moses to get Bezalel whom God had already filled with the Holy Spirit to build the tabernacle. God filled Bezalel with wisdom, knowledge, understanding and skills through the Holy Spirit infilling in him. Every God honouring vocation can become a ministry when empowered by the Holy Spirit.
We are all born with natural skills such as talent to sing, dance, cook, write well, oration and more. But, when these skills are used for God’s glory and ministry, there is a special anointing that comes upon this, which is what we are seeing with Bezalel. For instance, a doctor has many paths laid out for him. They could go into specialty hospitals and make a very good living for themselves or they could even work with tribals or those who cannot afford care. A doctor who does the latter is doing God’s work and he is sacrificing what he could have gained to ensure that the poor receive good medical care and for that decision and act he will be specially blessed.
Exodus 31:1-5 says, ‘Then the Lord said to Moses, 2 “See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, 3 and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills— 4 to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, 5 to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of crafts.’
Proverbs 2:6 says, ‘For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.’
Your ability is not merely a natural talent. If you are blessed with a natural talent, and if you can use your talent to do God’s work, then you are contributing to his ministry.
Grace Does Not Replace Skill, It Perfects It
When Bezalel was born he was probably blessed with certain natural gifts. He could have always had an inclination to do creative work on metallic art or wood work and such. But, when the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, his talents grew bigger and better. It was elevated to another level. When you are able to use your talents and your gifts for God’s work, that is where the real satisfaction lies. For these things that you do for God’s ministry, there will be a record in the heavens.
God does not encourage carelessness. He appreciates focus and using your God-given skills to be elevated by the Holy Spirit. Grace inspires excellence and when the grace of God comes upon us, the things that we normally do with the skillets that we have already have will be elevated.
Proverbs 22:29 says, ‘Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank.’
If we want to do things in the most excellent way, then we must submit our God-given talents to the Holy Spirit who will enhance them and help us excel in all that we do.
2 Timothy 2:15 says, ‘Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.’
The Holy Spirit empowers diligent people to do extraordinary things.
Excellence Combines Creativity And Character
It is when creativity and character combine, that we are able to do things exceedingly excellently well. God gave Bezalel, craftsmanship and wisdom. The kingdom needs people who are not only gifted but also trustworthy.
Daniel 6:3 says, ‘Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.’
Daniel was distinguished because an excellent spirit was in him. The Spirit of Excellence was upon him.
Psalm 90:17 says, ‘May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us, yes, establish the work of our hands.’
Colossians 3:23 says, ‘Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,’
Our Work Becomes Worship When Done For God
Our work becomes worship when done for the Lord. The tabernacle was built with hammers, chisels, fabric, wood and God. Ordinary work became sacred when it was dedicated to God’s purpose. The wood used for the tabernacle could have been the same wood used to build beds or tables. But the minute it was used for the tabernacle, that wood became sacred. The sacredness of the object changes, depending on its purpose. Every believer can glorify God through excellent work. Your work becomes worship when done for the Lord.
1 Corinthians 10:31 says, ‘ So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.’
Ephesians 2:10 says, ‘ For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.’
Hebrews 13:21 says, ‘ equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.’
