The Year Of Favour & The Day Of Vengeance

Isaiah 61:1-2
The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;
Isaiah prophesies what Jesus would say many years before he came to the world. Jesus repeats the same in Luke 4:18:
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
When Jesus read this scripture portion, the year of the Lord’s favour started but the only thing He missed out is “and the day of vengeance of our God ”
Whenever God saved His people, there was a judgement along with that. This is a principle of God. Although Jesus did not say it here, the judgement of God goes hand in hand with the beginning of the year of the Lord’s favour.
Lot was a righteous man but the land of Sodom and Gomorrah was filled with sin which was so great and grievous. Abraham and God had a negotiation, and after a long discussion, they decided that if 10 righteous people are there in the land, God will let them go. But as God saves these people, we see that He simultaneously brings down fire as judgement.
Even at the time of Noah, God saved 2 of each animal and 8 people of Noah’s family. The same water that they floated on, was destroying the rest of humankind and all creation. Salvation or redemption and judgement or condemnation happens together.
When the Israelites passed through the waters and were set free from Egypt, the same waters drowned the Pharaoh’s men. Here too, we see how salvation and judgement works together.
In Isaiah 61:1-2, when Isaiah was speaking of the redemption of the Israelites from Babylon, at the same time God was judging Babylon.
In the present age, in 2 Thessalonians 1:8, it is written “He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.”
The gospel is good news which gives salvation and eternal life. It gives healing, deliverance etc. If we do not obey it, there is punishment. The Gospel is not an optional thing! There is salvation only through the gospel!
Acts 4:12
“Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”
Jesus is the one who came as the visible God. There is salvation only through Him and in His name. Paul says that God will punish those who do not know Him.
In Acts 17:30-31 it is written, “In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. 31 For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”
It is our responsibility to find God. God has revealed Himself through His creation, Christ etc.
Romans 1:20
“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”
Hebrews 1:1-2 says; “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.”
The Son is the exact representation of God and if people don’t believe in Him, God has allotted them to be judged. This is why Isaiah 61 says “the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God” together. God’s favour and His vengeance come together. God desires that all be saved, so He is extending the day of vengeance and giving time for as many to be saved. He has been waiting for 2000 years and more and delaying Jesus’ second coming.
We need to accept Jesus and the gospel to fall in His favour rather than His vengeance. There is an urgency with which we must surrender and commit our lives to the Lord as this is the day of the Lord’s favour.
