The Sin Nature And The New Nature
This week we started off learning that the whole world, branches of science and the majority of our lives function based on feelings/ sensory knowledge and that’s the foundational drawback we humans face. However, the fact lies beyond this material world; God is spirit and the visible world/ the physical world emerged from the invisible world/ the spiritual world. For this very reason, we cannot see God through our 5 senses/ researches/ experiments since God is beyond this three-dimensional world. And so, make it a point to never take a permanent decision based on a temporary situation.
Hebrews 4:13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the assurance of what we hope for and the certainty of what we do not see.
We need to grow in faith and faith should not be based on our feelings, but on eternal facts. God is unchanging and His promises are Yes and Amen in Christ!
John 14:1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.
The next fact that we saw is that all humans are sinners; not by sinful deeds which begin at childhood but due to the sinful nature.
Psalm 51:5 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
Romans 5:18,19 Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people. For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.
Adam trespassed the boundary line that God set by eating the fruit from the tree which God had commanded him not to, and his disobedience resulted in condemnation for all people.. In the same way, one righteous act of the last Adam, Jesus resulted in justification and life for all people. It is hard for human logic to perceive the same, but this is the fact.
We are not sinners for what we do, but what we are; due to the sin nature that’s in us and that’s the case for the entire mankind. By birth, we all come from Adam; irrespective of which race/ language/ tribe/ complexions each one of us belong to.
Acts 17:26 From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.
We cannot change our nature although we can improve our behavior/ lifestyle.
For instance, when I’d been to Israel I met Keralites who spoke Hebrew fluently, but it doesn’t mean they are Jews, they’re still Keralites. Also, we may have people in our friends circle/relatives who’re Keralites/ Indians but are native English/ Hindi/ any other language speakers being a resident in that particular state/nation. So it all lies in our genealogy.
It's because we’re born as sinners, that we commit sin and not because we commit sin that we become sinners. Every human has the sinful nature by birth and it leads to sinful deeds. So here lies the fundamental fact for all humans: I’m a sinner because I’m born into Adam’s family.
Apostle Paul elaborates the sinful deeds of human lives in Romans 1:1- Romans 5:11 which can be termed as ‘sins’, and Romans 5:12- Romans 8:39 deals with the sinful nature/ ‘sin’ that we inherited from Adam.
Our sin nature is referred to as ‘the old man’ in some portions of the Bible which portrays ‘this is what I am’ / ‘this is my being’ from which we need a deliverance; and the Cross of Christ is the remedy because Jesus crucified our sinful nature on the Cross. When we identify ourselves with the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus; we come out of our sinful nature. But for our actions of sin/ what we do in our lives, we need repentance and forgiveness of sins for a clear conscience and continual fellowship with God which is made possible through the blood of Jesus.
The Cross takes care of my sinful nature and the Blood takes care of my sinful acts.
SIN = Sinful nature → from Adam→ the Cross of Christ
SINS = Sinful acts → our lives → the Blood of Jesus
