No Trying, But Trusting

The Holy Spirit is the Helper and He has the seal of ownership over us. Because we are His property, and are the temple of God, the earthly tent where He dwells, we are different from the world.
In the Old Testament, people received salvation by following God’s stipulated laws and commands. In Mount Sinai, when Moses came down with the tablets, he had to break it because the people sinned and many were killed.
In the New Testament however, the age of the law has passed, we are in the age of grace. At the start of this period, 3,000 people were baptised and saved.
The Law killed, because our flesh could not live up to its standards. In this age, the Holy Spirit gives us life through faith.
John 3:6 “Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.”
John 6:63 “The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life.”
In God’s presence, flesh has no value. It only rebels against God. God’s Word has the power and ability to separate our flesh and spirit.
Jesus modelled how to live in the spirit while living on earth.
John 14:8-12
“8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”
9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.”
It doesn’t make sense to us how one person can live inside us. But this is not physical, this is about a spirit and spirit living together. Spirits can co- exist inside a person. In Mark 5, a legion (about 6000) of demon spirits lived inside a man.
Jesus lived in the Father, and the Father in Jesus. All that Jesus did and thought was through His Father. From when the Spirit landed on Jesus as a dove at the time of His baptism, He began doing His Father’s work, as a utensil handed unto the Father’s hands. He gave permission to the Holy Spirit to do what the Father wanted in His life. This is the life that we are also called to live.
John 10:37-38 “37 Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father. 38 But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.”
Jesus only did what the father had assigned him to do. For this, He gave permission to the Holy Spirit to work for Him.
There is a principle here: No trying but trusting: Don’t try on your own, instead trust God.
A lot of times we want to do good things but are unable to. For example; we want to pray but feel tired; we want to preach the gospel but are scared that people will make fun of us.
Romans 1.16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.
Our spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. It is true that we cannot do good on our own. Our flesh always fails us.
So, instead of trying on our own, we must surrender to the Holy Spirit and ask Him to work through us. We must be aware that we will fail if we try to do anything on our own. Living in the Holy Spirit or being led by the Spirit means we should trust the Holy Spirit to do whatever we cannot do. We must give the Holy Spirit freedom to do what He has to do. As John the Baptist said; ‘We (our self/flesh) must decrease, and He must increase.’
Romans 7 constantly uses the word “I”, and then cries out that “I” am unable to please God.
Romans 7.24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?
In Romans 8, we shift to the Spirit working in us! This is when we are able to live according to God’s will for us. Instead of struggling on our own and inevitably failing, we should learn to yield completely to God and let Him work in us and through us.
No trying but trusting God !! When we do this, our flesh will be broken and we will live a victorious life led by the Spirit. When we give our lives to the Holy Spirit, He will do it beautifully in us and through us.
