This Can Be Your Story - Part 6

We went through many foundational facts about the life of Joseph. If we try to read and meditate on the portions of Joseph's life portrayal in the Bible we will be surprised to see ourselves very similar to Joseph in some of his phases of life. Joseph directly belonged or had an inheritance connection to a godly family as he was a direct descendant of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
In the life of Joseph it's clearly portrayed that all his siblings were against him but God raised him high. Similarly if you are right now in such a scenario, believe fully that our God is capable of raising you above all those around you. It should be noticed that God brought Joseph to experience the total fullness of his ultimate blessings and made all to bow before him.
When Jacob sends his children to search for Joseph, the brothers of Joseph were filled with so much hatred and envy toward him.
Genesis 37:19
“Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other. “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.
Here we can see what the brothers have planned for Joseph. They plotted to kill Joseph and put Joseph in a pit. Then they told Jacob that a wild animal attacked Joseph.
Genesis 37:22-23
“Don’t shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the wilderness, but don’t lay a hand on him.” Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father.
So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the ornate robe he was wearing
This portion portrays a similarity to Jesus. In general Joseph is seen to be a character that has many similarities to Jesus in the New Testament.
Here it's basically the stripping of his outer garment or robe like what was done by Jesus at time of his crucifixion.
If you are in a situation now where all your relatives especially your blood brothers have planned to put you in danger or have hatred for you this can be your story too.
Genesis 37:24
and they took him and threw him into the cistern. The cistern was empty; there was no water in it.
This just shows how cruel his brothers were such that it led them to be put in the pit .
Genesis 37:26
Judah said to his brothers, “What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood? Come, let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood.” His brothers agreed.
Here Judah is planning to sell Joseph to the Ishmaelites who is a similar character to Judas in the New testament who sold Jesus.
Genesis 37:28-30
So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.
When Reuben returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes. He went back to his brothers and said, “The boy isn’t there! Where can I turn now?”
Genesis 37:31-35
Then they got Joseph’s robe, slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood. They took the ornate robe back to their father and said, “We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your son’s robe.” He recognized it and said, “It is my son’s robe! Some ferocious animal has devoured him. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces.” Then Jacob tore his clothes, put on a sackcloth and mourned for his son for many days. All his sons and daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. “No,” he said, “I will continue to mourn until I join my son in the grave.” So his father wept for him.
Joseph's brothers took the robe of Joseph and dipped in animal blood in order to provide false evidence to Jacob that Joseph was attacked by an animal. Jacob, believing their false report, started to mourn the death of Joseph.
This is what the devil does in our lives too. He provides false evidence or lies to make people believe and stay in a lifelong sadness or depression.
Whatever we do in one generation, if wrong it will be passed on to the other generations to follow. If someone breaks the generational curses then it's broken there.
Genesis 37:35-36
All his sons and daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. “No,” he said, “I will continue to mourn until I join my son in the grave.” So his father wept for him.
Meanwhile, the Midianites sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard.
This portion just tells us even if God brings relief and hope to us or the broken-hearted we often are reluctant to accept the hope and comfort, instead we bury ourselves in the sadness.
Then we will look into the second phase or stage of Joseph's life. This is the rejected slave stage, we all may have many visions and dreams within us but no significant changes in our lives. This can be your story, never will God leave any of his promises from flourishing.
