The Blessing Of Humility

James 4:6
But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favour to the humble.”
Pride is the opposite of humility. Humility can attract God’s favour and God’s pleasure. Humility can be portrayed on the outside through actions of courtesy. But this does not necessarily mean that a person is humble at heart. People can act humble, but only God knows a person who is truly humble at heart.
One of the ways to receive God’s favour and grace into our lives is by being humble. A life of humility brings us God’s grace. For God loves the humble and He opposes the proud. The Word of God says the way to honour is being humble, and pride comes before destruction. We need to be humble in our attitude and deed and in due time God will lift us up.
All power, position and blessings come from the Lord. Whatever we have, whatever we do, is all because of God, all glory belongs to Him. If we have the understanding that every move we make is because the Lord allows it, then we will be able to humble ourselves. We are privileged to be called His children. We don't deserve it. Humility keeps us on the track that God wants us to be on. It helps us to see beyond ourselves. Pride can cause blindness. We can't see anything else other than ourselves. If we have to look beyond ourselves and our lives, we must be humble. We can see others and their needs only through the lens of humility.
A follower of Jesus is marked by humility. That is when around people and in private we stay humble. People find it difficult to accept a person who claims to be a follower of Christ but is proud at heart. As Christ was humble, we too as His followers must imitate Him.
Jesus is the most humble person in the Universe.
Matthew 11:29
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Jesus, the creator of the Universe is telling us to be humble as He is, to learn from Him. The core of Jesus’ character is humility. He did everything in that humility. Just as Christ our Lord, we too must be humble, imitating His character.
It is humility that helps us to stoop down and help those who are in need. Only the one who is humble can bend down and help another. Only if you bend down can you lift those who are fallen. Humility does not assume credits. Humility swallows ego and gives all glory to God. The humble of heart do not need credit.
Only the humble can worship God. To raise our hands, and for worship to break forth from us, we have to humble ourselves in the presence of God.
Revelation 4:9-10
Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne.
Revelation 4 talks about the worship in heaven. We see the twenty-four elders seated around the throne of God. That's twelve from the Old Testament and twelve from the New Testament, representing the two covenants. The twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve disciples of Jesus.
During worship, they throw down their crowns and fall on their face to worship God. The four creatures worship God. Millions and millions of angels worship God. Worship comes out only because of the humility in the heart. People can sing, but if singing has to become worship, there must be humility in our attitude.
Many people cannot worship God because of their attitude. They can sing, play music, but cannot worship because their heart is not right. The attitude of having accomplished things themselves and not having humility to attribute it to God. Singing or playing an instrument is not worship. Worship stems from the depth of our heart, out of humility.
Never forget where we came from. This remembrance grounds us. When we forget our sinful life and humble beginnings, we become proud. Always remember the start. How we were. God saved us, washed us and took us ahead. When we remember our past, we can be humble. God has forgiven us of our countless sins and we are eternally indebted to God.
God chose each one of us not because of our strengths or our merits but because of our weaknesses. We are what we are today only because of the grace of God. The more we mature, the more humble we ought to become.
