A New Order Of Things In Your Life Hebrews chapter 9: Part 5
06 December, 2021
In the New Testament, God has designed a very different kind of Temple from the one in the Old Testament. Now each one of God’s children (our body) or God’s church (corporate body of Christ) is the temple of God.
The Temple of God has changed: from shadow to the actual one. In accordance with this change, the old service style and old priesthood also changed. We have a New Order/ Law/ Covenant today.
Hebrews 9:6-10 says, ‘6 When everything had been arranged like this, the priests entered regularly into the outer room to carry on their ministry. 7 But only the high priest entered the inner room, and that only once a year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance. 8 The Holy Spirit was showing by this that the way into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still functioning. 9 This is an illustration for the present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered were not able to clear the conscience of the worshiper. 10 They are only a matter of food and drink and various ceremonial washings—external regulations applying until the time of the new order.’
The Author of Hebrews is trying to impress upon its readers that times have changed. The Old Covenant has changed and the new has to be implemented. Going back to the Old is a waste of time. A new Order has come but many still follow the old.
In the Old Testament there was a certain priestly order. As part of this, the priests regularly (daily) entered into the outer room to minister. But, what did they do? One of the things that they constantly did was light the Menorah with new oil and flame, ensuring its always blazing. In the current situation, many people are under the misconception that pastors deliver sermons every sunday and go about their regular lives, working and attending to the social norms, the other days. However, they are mistaken. As pastors, and men and women of God, they pray, meditate and tirelessly minister on a daily basis.
In the Old Testament, the priests almost always on a regular basis, offer sacrifices to the Lord. They change bread every day.
The High Priest enters the inner room once a year on the Day of Atonement with a sacrifice of blood. This principle holds good even today, as we will not be able to enter the innermost chamber without the blood of Jesus. On the Day of Atonement ( Yon Kippur), the High Priest enters the Holy Of Holies for sins committed out of ignorance. All the known sins are atoned for , daily in the outer room by the priests.
However when we come to the New Testament, God made things easier for us with the ultimate sacrifice of his son Jesus, where he dies for us, for the sins we committed knowingly and unknowingly. Hence, like the days of the Old Testament there isn’t a need to render prayers and sacrifices, separately for the sins committed. Therefore, Jesus’s sacrifice remains the most supreme sacrifice.
Yet another poignant point made in this excerpt from the Scripture is that, once the High priest leaves the innermost chamber, that part is cordoned off and closed for the rest of the year. Hence, as long as the Holy of holies remain, there isn’t a way that’s been created for the common man. The sacrifices of animals and the gifts rendered up in prayer daily was not sufficient enough in clearing the conscience of man or worshipper. However, now that has changed and a new order has been bestowed, where the Lord has created a new way for us. The New Order consists of a way in which the worshiper is able to gain peace through a clear conscience.
Acts 17:24 says, ‘The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands.’
Our mighty God no longer lives in the temple built by human hands and even if the Jews built another temple, the Lord will not reside there.
Acts 17:25 says, ‘And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.’
For the Lord does not need to be served by human hands, but he is the creator of all and gives everyone and everything, life and breath, as the New Order has been created. Earlier the priests needed physical strength to sacrifice animals but not so today.
Isaiah 43:18-19 says, ‘“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. 19
See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.’
God is doing new things, he is creating a way for us and building spiritual living waters among us, in our parched state. A New Order is created, as beautifully put in the verse below,
2 Corinthians 5: 17 says, ‘17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!’
A person’s life before and after being born again is very different. After being born again, there is a new peace and hope as we meditate in the Word and prayer. The pattern and lifestyle changes.
