Here I Am… | Hebrews 10 (Part 2)

Hebrews 10:5 -10

Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said:

“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,

but a body you prepared for me;

6 with burnt offerings and sin offerings

you were not pleased.

7 Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll

I have come to do your will, my God.’

8 First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”though they were offered in accordance with the law. 9 Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.”He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all

Firstly we all should understand the fact that Jesus Christ  came to this world and lived for 33 years and did not  just decide to sacrifice himself  for mankind.  The entire sacrifice of him for us in the cross of cavalry  was for a clear purpose as it is written in the scrolls of the Bible. This is called the prophetic foundation for Messiah’s sacrificial death.

The writer of Hebrews also echoes psalm 40 in his portrayal of Jesus. Everything was pre-planned by God so it is not worth it for anyone to now backslide  and take a U-turn to go back to old ways but to stand put and use the knowledge in Christ and attain salvation.

Let us look into the verses more in detail. The five verses can be understood more clearly when divided for clearer understanding.

When Jesus came into this world sacrificing and offering, God did not desire. God  was never  pleased with any of the sacrifices offered according to the old law fully but the old testament law was serving as a mirror, a tutor, a temporary guardian for what was to come to fulfill these.

When the time was right a body was prepared. A physical body was prepared here on earth where Jesus should live and fulfill the plan as a sacrifice for our sins once and for all and put an end to all these endless sacrifices according to the old law.

With burnt offerings and sin offerings, God was never pleased. According to the old law all the body parts of animals were offered as sacrifice and sin offerings so Jesus came to this world and said ‘ Here I am ‘

Jesus came to do God’s will. God did not desire these burnt offerings and sacrifices so he sent Jesus to this world to put an end to the endless sacrifices in accordance with the Old Law. Jesus was sent to be a sacrifice once and for all.

God set aside the first to establish the second.  We have been cleansed and made holy by this will.

Hebrews 10 :10

And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all

This particular verse is quoted from

Psalms 40:6-8

Sacrifice and offering you did not desire –

but my ears you have opened –

burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require.

7 Then I said, “Here I am, I have come, it is written about me in the scroll. 8 I desire to do your will, my God;your law is within my heart.”

1 Samuel 15:22

But Samuel replied:“Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord?To obey is better than sacrifice,(and to heed is better than the fat of rams
Here Samuel is speaking to Saul about the importance of obeying the law as compared to the sacrifices. God always desires his people to listen to his word with concentration.  The easiest way to satisfy God’s wish is by listening to his word through sermons and teachings.

Hosea 6:6

For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings
Here it clearly says God desires mercy and not sacrifices being offered. An example is when Solomon sacrificed 1000 bulls for attaining wisdom and knowledge from God.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you?To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God
God only wanted the fulfilment of all that is written in the scrolls through Jesus Christ.  All books of the Bible have the revelation of Christ in them.

1 Peter 1:20

He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.

God knew all of man would sin and there was a need for Jesus to come down and be crucified as sacrifice for our sins .

Revelation 13:8

“and all who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain”

One of the uniqueness of God’s plan is that the spiritual world gets fulfilled first  and only  later in  the physical world. Jesus was slaughtered before the world was created and the earthly manifestation was fulfilled only much later about 2000 years ago when Jesus was crucified .

We  should all pray to God to have Christ revealed to us.  The revelation of Jesus is the greatest revelation in the world. Any new thing can  prosper only  if it is built upon the revelation of Christ. We all should desire for this revelation in our lives. The New Testament is concealed in the Old Testament. Whenever we read the New Testament the Old Testament is explained. The Old Testament can be considered  as a dark room and the New Testament as a torch.  This torch can be used to put more light and clearer understanding of the Old Testament. The New Testament and Old Testament complement each other. The historic fulfilment is done before the Spiritual fulfilment. The New Testament is always written in the  past tense whilst the Old Testament is written in the future tense.

Everything is done and finished through Jesus. We have to just believe and enjoy the goodness of our Lord.
