Revelation of the Goodness of God
Allen Gardiner was a missionary who went to a remote island in South America to preach the gospel. At the age of 57, he died of starvation on that island. At that time there were no technologies or resources as there are today. When he died, people found a small diary next to him. He recorded all the details of his life there along with the trials and hardships. His last diary entry was “I am overwhelmed with the sense of the goodness of God in my life”. He lived on that island with no one to support him and no food to eat, however this was his last entry!
We tend to complain about little things, saying “God didn't do this and that for me!”, even when our lives are so good. Whatever be the situation, there is never a change in God’s goodness as God never changes. He is always good; all the time. What we need is an attitudinal change and the grace to praise in every situation!
Just like the sun shines every single day giving out heat and light without looking at who it is helping, God is also ever good to us all!
If we think God is not good to us, it is because we do not understand His thoughts and plans for us.
Isaiah 55:8-9
““For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.””
A small child does not understand his/her father’s thoughts. Sometimes in times of desperation, we pray the wrong prayers because we do not know what is right for us and what we need. We pray contradictory prayers within the same hour! Sometimes, we praise God’s goodness and then claim God does not care for us all within a day! Our graph is not steady. However there is no shadow of change in God, we can count on Him. He is constant. He is always good.
But what is this higher thought that God has for us?
Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
God is mindful of us, He has plans for us and He cares for us. The plans He has are to prosper us and they are only for our good and for our future! Just like a parent hopes for good things for their children, so much more does our Heavenly Father. A parent never plans anything bad for their children.
Ecclessiastes 3:11 “He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.”
Everything has its time and God has put his eternal spirit in us but yet we cannot fathom the full plan that God has for us. This is why we keep complaining and questioning God; but we must trust His timing and his blueprint for our life. It is impossible for the finite mind of man to grasp the height, depth and width of God’s love and his ways as it is to empty the waters of the ocean with a small shell. God has to some degree revealed to his children about his ways but not in fullness. So it is always wise to just believe the Word of God which tells us that God is good, there is no evil in Him.
The two ways to taste and see God is to have a personal experience with God and to read the Word of God and know Him. Some people are shocked on reading the Old Testament where there is so much bloodshed and it feels like God repented and changed in the New Testament. But God never changes, so why do we feel this difference? In the Old testament, there wasn't a full revelation about God. There was a covering over the Old testament Law in that time and God was not fully revealed.
Hebrews 1:1-3 “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.”
We only have the true and full revelation about God in Jesus.
Colossians 1:15 “The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.”
Acts 10:38 “how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.”
God is good and we see His fullness in Jesus who went about doing good and only good. Therefore we must read the Bible in the right way and only then may we understand the true nature of God.
