Why Sleepless Nights?
I get many prayer requests regarding tension, anxiety and sleepless nights. Many people have all the material blessings they require but no peace. Peace that a person needs cannot be bought with money.
From the very beginning till present, no one else other than our Lord Jesus has promised to give us peace; peace so magnificent, peace that passes all understanding.
Matthew 11:28-30
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
In verse 28 we find Jesus calling everyone to him. In my understanding when a group of people come to you with their problems, the peace that you initially had goes and you become troubled.
And it is those people with troubles, troubles not of the physical body but the emotional toil and troubles that people have, Jesus is calling such people to him.
It is an open invitation. Jesus does not look at one’s sins or background or circumstances. He is calling all of us to go to him.
Jesus repeatedly uses the word rest in verses 28 and 29. In verse 29, he speaks about the ‘rest for your souls’. The soul comprises one's mind, will and emotions combined.
This is good news for all who find it difficult to sleep. Jesus claims that he will give you rest! He will hold you close and you will find rest in him.
Isaiah 9:6 ‘For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.’
He is the Prince of Peace! Then where else do we have to go looking? Jesus says, come to me, anytime and anywhere, however big the storm might be inside you, I am there to offer you peace.
In the midst of the storm when the disciples were terrified, Jesus was inside the boat resting. He was not anxious or worried.
It is this peace that he possesses, which he is willing to give us.
How amazing is our Lord.
All these verses that Jesus has given us is our strength. We should not merely read the Word but eat the Word. We need to take it inside as a pill, it should be incorporated into our mind and thoughts. Only then will it bear fruit. The Word of God should be a part of us.
In doing this, we receive God’s peace. His peace becomes a part of our lives.
Even though Jesus was resting during the storm the disciples were not able to rest because -
1. They were busy trying to save Jesus and themselves.
This is what we too end up doing. We try to save the savior.
2. They were terrified.
3. They had no faith. Faithless people are sleepless people.
Summary
Come to me and I will give you rest. This is Christ’s open invitation for everyone who yearns for peace. Peace that is found nowhere else but only in our Lord Jesus Christ. Check out this episode where Br. Damien Antony teaches about the peace that our Christ is offering us.
