Jesus’ Model Sabbath

There is a celebration in Sabbath life. In the Old testament it was one day in a week but in the New Testament, it was a whole life . The Old Testament is the shadow of the true reality of life in the New Testament. We are at rest everyday whatever be the situation knowing that God will take care of us. This Sabbath lifestyle. We must put all our anxious thoughts into Christ and rest in Him even as we live on our earth.
 
Jesus is the Lord Of Sabbath. And what did He do while on earth on Sabbath days ? He did good works. That is what the ‘Lord of Sabbath’ did instead of being inactive that day as the Jews of that time were doing. Jesus healed and delivered people on Sabbath day. He did 7 miracles on Sabbath and one of the crimes for crucifying Him was that He broke the sabbath rules. Sabbath violators were killed at that time but Jesus was actually fulfilling the sabbath requirements that we who believe in Him can receive sabbath rest through Him.
 
Psalm 127.2 “It really is senseless to work so hard from early morning till late at night, toiling to make a living for fear of not having enough. God can provide for his devoted lovers even while they sleep!” ( Passion Translation)
 
Luke 14. 1-5
1 One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched. 2 There in front of him was a man suffering from abnormal swelling of his body. 3 Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?” 4 But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him on his way.
5 Then he asked them, “If one of you has a child or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?”
 
It was God who gave the commandment to observe the Sabbath. But the religious leaders of that time did not comprehend the true concept or principle behind it. They thought that Jesus was breaking the Law of Moses when He was in reality fulfilling the Law. They did not understand it.
In the above passage, Jesus questioned them in this regard and they had no answer.
 
Luke 6.9 Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”
Here too, Jesus questions them who criticised Him. Those with the religious spirit in them was not able to comprehend the “why” of many things. They obeyed the “Do’s and Don’t’s” without understanding the “why’ behind it. Jesus was trying to make them understand that sabbath day should be a day that they do something good.
 
Luke 6:5 Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
Jesus explains that He is above everything . He healed people on sabbath and did good things.
 
John 5.16,17 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.”
Jesus and His father never took rest from doing good works and He expects the same from us. He modelled it out to us.
