Are You Following The Right Gospel?

There is a  lot of difference between the Old and the New Testaments. They are two covenants. In the Old Covenant, it was mercy and kindness while the New Covenant is based on grace: the unbelievable, amazing grace of God.

John 1.17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
What is grace and truth ? The revelation of both these are seen in Jesus. Jesus brought many things like peace etc but grace and truth are the main two things.

In John 14.1, Jesus said, “ I am the Truth”.

Galatians 1.6-9 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel — 7 which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! 9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!

Paul sharply admonishes the Galatians who turned away from the right gospel. To give the true gospel to people is an apostolic responsibility. In Galatians 3.1, he writes “You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified.” And in Chapter 5.1, he says “ It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery”

But sadly even now, many believers who have experienced the amazing grace of God has gone back to be yoked to slavery. Many traditional Christians still follow a “different gospel” which is to follow the traditions and rituals of the Old Covenant even as they believe in Christ. They gave more importance to traditions and declared only observance of such works would lead to heaven. Many fear that God would punish them if they did anything wrong. But Jesus frees us from all such fears and bondages by finishing the work of the Cross. Any gospel which preaches otherwise is a wrong gospel.

There is also a teaching that even after we are born again and baptised, if we do anything wrong we will be punished. Our eternal life is not based on our good works; instead it is based on our faith in what Christ has done for us on the Cross. Our God is pleased in us through what Christ has done for us. Such wrong gospels can lead people to live in fear and depression as if living in hell while on earth. It is only the truth in the gospel that by believing in Jesus you are set free. Satan takes away the simplicity in this Truth from within us and makes it into a very complicated theology.
