Our Marriage To Christ

We saw the example of the woman and two husbands in Romans 7.
Romans 7.1-4 1 Do you not know, brothers and sisters —for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law has authority over someone only as long as that person lives? 2 For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him. 3 So then, if she has sexual relations with another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man. 4 So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God.
As long as we live, we are all under some law. A woman who is married, is under the husband’s authority. But once the husband is no more, she is free from this covenant.
In the same way, for us, the first husband is the Old Testament law and the second husband is Christ. But instead of the first husband dying, we are to die to the Law and be alive in Christ.
A relationship while in another is considered to be adultery. Now the second husband is Christ according to this example.
We also saw the story from 1 Samuel 25 about David, Abigail and Nabal. Abigail represents us, while Nabal represents the Old Testament and David, Christ. She married David after nabal died.
Abigail cannot marry both David and Nabal and stay together at the same time. They would never go together. In the same way, we cannot be under the Law and Christ at the same time. Either Moses or Jesus. This is why Paul strongly writes for the Jews to not go back to the Law (Galatians 3.1-5).
1 Corinthians 6:17 “But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.”
It is an eternal bonding that cannot be separated. When we become one with Christ, we become an inseparable unit.
We cannot mix the Old Law with our new life with Christ. Jesus explained it in Luke 5:37-39 “And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.’ ””
Life with Christ is a New Covenant which cannot be mixed with the Old Testament Law.
The Law, who was our first husband, is good and perfect. It is from God. But he is also a perfectionist. If you violate even one commandment, it will be counted as violating all. The punishments include stoning to death, cutting off limbs, and other such grave actions.
Christ has freed us from this.
Christ, our second husband is the man of our dreams; he’s even better. He has no sin in Him. He has perfect love, care, loyalty and beauty. He is also a perfectionist. But he does everything for his bride. He has already completed it and continues to do it. He stands with the accused and guilty and frees them. All he asks is that we love and live with him and walk with him. He helps us through the Holy Spirit to become like him. He gives us perfect peace.
John 15:13 “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

- Romans 7.6 But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.”: We are not under the Law
