Explanation About Flesh

Though Romans 7 starts dealing with freedom from the Law, the author suddenly uses the term ‘flesh’. Biblically, the Greek word used for flesh is ‘Sarx’ which refers to the human body, human beings in general and also the sin nature/ the fallen nature. Irrespective of how deferential or how educated a person may be, every human being has a sinful nature in them.

Adam and Eve were devoid of sin/ blemish when God created them. However, when they gave ears to the devil and fell into sin, Satan’s nature came upon their mind, body and spirit; due to which human spirits got disconnected (dead) from God, their minds were severely damaged and human bodies became corrupted with evil and lustful desires. 
For this reason, Jesus was born of a virgin and by the power of the Holy Spirit; and Joseph was only Jesus’ foster-father. 

Romans 7:5 For when we were in the realm of the flesh, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in us, so that we bore fruit for death.

As per the Biblical terminology, every person who is unsaved and before being saved are in the realm of the flesh/ are living in the flesh. After being saved, we live in the Spirit. 

What is flesh?

• The flesh is the fallen and corrupted human body with all its lusts.
• The sinful state of human beings working as a power/force in opposition to the Spirit
• Inclination towards sin that we have received through the generational lines all the way from Adam.
• The carnal state of our nature.
• The fallen nature or sin nature before born-again state
• The body programmed by the old sinful nature in those who are already  born-again (Concerning those who’ve already been saved, just as how an act/ event develops into a habit/ culture by repetition, although our sinful nature has been crucified with Christ, our body has been programmed according to the sinful nature in which we lived for years before being saved) 
• Remains of the old man left behind in the body. Sin completely leaves the Spirit when we are born again
• The effects of the residual old self

Flesh is like a wild animal that can never be tamed. Whether saved or unsaved, our bodies have the residue of the sinful nature because in the born-again experience, it’s only our spirits that have been saved while our bodies are yet to be redeemed.
