Hope In The Darkest Hour

God is our story maker; the Holy Spirit is our biographer. He records everything that happens in our life and He also regulates things for us.
Romans 8:28
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”
God is working out good for those who love God and are predestined by God. Our God cares for us and is interested in the smallest details of our lives. Know that he cares for us and loves us unconditionally. He even cares for the livestock or pet animals in our lives.
Matthew 10:29
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father.
He cares for the minute details in our lives.
Is there hope in our darkest hour?
Acts 12:6
‘The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance.’
The day before King Herod was to bring Peter to trial, he was sleeping between two guards, bound by chains. The King’s judgement was final and it would result in his life or death. The King was going to give the judgement which shows he was an important person. Now, Peter was a disciple of Jesus. Initially Peter was also just a fisherman in the society. However, after Jesus resurrected from the dead, Peter was proclaimed as a leader in the Christian community. Peter was kept in between two guards and was treated like a common criminal even though he never retaliated against the law or threw a fight. Guards were also placed at the entrance of the gate to ensure that the criminal does not escape.
Now Peter is sleeping while in chains in a maximum security prison. It was not easy to sleep when he knew he could die the next day. As mentioned in the early verses of Chapter 12, James the brother of John was put to death with the sword. Now the members of Jesus’ core group (Peter, James and John) were dwindling, with Peter now on trial.
If you think about this situation, not a lot of us can get a sound sleep before our trial, where in most cases, the trial usually condemns the man and sentences him to his death. It is humanly impossible to sleep in a situation like this. And Peter was not a brave man where in the past it’s been written that he disowned Jesus and any relationship with him, when a woman pointed out that he was Jesus’ disciple. He had no guts at that time to say that he was one among the twelve disciples of Jesus.
But after the infilling of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, Peter was a different person. If Peter could sleep amidst the darkest hour, it means that he had hope amidst this darkness. If he is ordered to be executed then he has the assurance that he will go to heaven or else he knows God will give him a miraculous day out. He was ready to live or die . This means that he had hope in life and in death.
As Paul said in Philippians 1.21, “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”
Dying was profitable for Peter also. Now, at the end of the story, Peter was rescued by a guardian angel and escaped the prison. He received a supernatural freedom from the prison.
Jesus can give you hope in the midnight hour of the darkest hours of your life.
Acts 16:29–31 says, ‘The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.’
Paul and Silas were also placed in the inner cell, where it is impossible to escape. They were also chained while they were imprisoned. However they conducted a praise party in the prison. They made the jail a praise/worship centre. There was a jail breaking anointing and when they started praising, there was a violent earthquake and the prison doors flew open and the chains came loose of all those who were imprisoned. Seeing the incident, the jailer and the family got baptised. The reason for all this to happen is because they praised God even amidst their pain. They decided to trust God and sing hymns even when they were chained. It was their attitude of thanksgiving instead of complaining that brought freedom.
Psalm 34:5 says, ‘Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.’
Do not lose hope even in your darkest hour. God can turn around your life and we must pray for his grace so that we may place our hope in him in life and in death. We must pray for the shalom of Jesus Christ.
