The Horn Of Salvation

In Luke 1, we see the songs of Mary, Elizabeth, and Zechariah. We see how Mary’s life completely turned around with the news from the angel that she would have a son. She was an engaged woman who would be pregnant before the wedding! There was no bigger shame in Nazareth.
But looking at it in another way, Mary got the biggest blessing of all! She was able to give birth to the creator and the saviour of the entire universe. So she sang that she was blessed among the generations.
In the same way, Elizabeth and Zechariah’s lives were also completely turned around in a quick instant when God moved in their lives. We too, can receive such blessings and sing about it as Mary and Zechariah sang in Luke 1.
Mary sang the words that had been sung by a woman in the Old Testament Hannah, who prayed fervently for a child. Her prayers were answered and she was given the prophet Samuel as a son who changed history.
In Zechariah’ s song in Luke 1:69-72, he sings, “He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David 70 (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago), 71 salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us— 72 to show mercy to our ancestors and to remember his holy covenant,
We need to know the Jewish background and context of the words, “ a horn of salvation”.
In Deuteronomy 33:17, it says “A firstborn bull—he has majesty, and his horns are the horns of a wild ox; with them he shall gore the peoples, all of them, to the ends of the earth; they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of Manasseh.””
The horn is a symbol of power. A powerless person is of no use. Jesus said in Luke 24:49, “And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
We must minister in the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus is the “horn of salvation” from the house. Of David. This horn is so powerful that it can tear down and destroy. The horn of an ox is very powerful. It is more powerful than its legs or other parts. God gives such power to His people.
This was Zechariah’s prayer for years and it was being fulfilled through Jesus.
Numbers 23:22
God brought them out of Egypt; they have the strength of a wild ox.
The people of Israel were slaves and were a weak nation. God gave them strength and brought the Israelites out of slavery. When we are weak, we are strong in Christ ( 2 Corinthians 12.10). We must be a lamb before Jesus and as strong as a lion in front of Satan.
God raises this same horn of salvation over each of us. We should walk in that strength and realise that we can overcome any situation!
