The Oil Of Gladness
Believe that this week our God has gone before us to the places that we will be going to and has done things for us to prepare the way for us so that we are blessed and happy. In the scripture, you must have read of how Jesus went before the disciples to Galilee, He prepared everything for them, including breakfast. In between that God restores Peter and brings him back (John 21).
We have been looking into Isaiah chapter 61. Today, we will look into Isaiah 61:3 in detail.
Isaiah 61:3 says, ‘and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.’
Jesus Christ was anointed that He may pour the oil of joy on those who were in mourning. The meaning of the word ‘Christ/Messiah’ is “The Anointed One’. ‘To anoint’ means to send/delegate a person for a special task after empowering him to do the assignment. For example, before David went to battle, Prophet Samuel poured the anointed oil upon him. When this anointing oil was poured on him, at the same time the Holy Spirit came upon him. The operating system behind their victory is this ‘anointing’. David is the Old Testament type/shadow of Jesus.
1 John 2:27 says, ‘As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.’
The anointing comes from the anointed. As John the Baptist said, I have baptised you with water. There is someone who will come after me, whose sandals I don’t deserve to touch. When he comes he will baptise you in the fire and Holy Spirit (Mathew 3.11). And the anointed one, Christ will pour out the oil of joy instead of mourning. The oil of joy/gladness contains joy and when this oil is poured on to you, you will experience joy. Now this joy is poured out instead of mourning. The word ‘mourning’ is used when there is a calamity or a death in the household. Mourning is a hopeless cry with sorrow and pain. When Jesus was born, King Herod killed all the infant baby boys who were two years old and under, mothers cried and wept in sorrow and all the mothers were mourning (Mathew 2.18). Now imagine such a situation, a group of people going through this pain. And imagine the oil of joy is poured into them and the atmosphere changes to that of joy.
In the ancient days, when a guest of honour or a very important person came to the house, a perfumed oil was poured onto them. This oil is usually very expensive and when this oil is poured, a faint aroma spreads in the air, indicating that someone important has arrived. This perfumed oil is also poured out when there is a celebration amidst the people. Pouring the oil indicates that it has brought joy. The anointing over Jesus is a joy bringer. The minute Jesus was born, a battalion of angels came down and said “Joy to the world” (Luke 2.10) . Jesus is the joy bringer and the anointing upon Jesus brings us joy. This joy can transform mourning into gladness. Back then, when people were in deep pain, they would tear off their clothes and pull at their hair.
Jesus brings the oil of gladness and joy. He can bring joy to a person in despair and turn their mourning into dancing. And when He turns mourning into gladness, He also transforms the person from within. Jesus transforms the mourner. Our Jesus will work on your heart, your attitude and your situations and transform your mourning to joy.
Psalm 23:5 says, ‘You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.’
Every word written in the Bible can penetrate into our life and change us into joyful people.
