The Year Of Favour & The Day of Vengeance
Isaiah 61. 1-2 The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, 2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn,
Luke 4:18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free”
In the book of Luke, we see Jesus reading the same scripture as in the book of Isaiah. That moment, the scripture was fulfilled and the time of God’s favour began. However, He did not read out the part about God’s vengeance.
In history, whenever God rescued His people, there was a judgement that came along with it. On one side there was salvation, on the other side there was judgement.
Lot was righteous but Sodom and Gomorra was a corrupt land. Abraham negotiated with God and they decided that if there are even 10 righteous people in the land, God would not destroy the place. And then God sent his angels to destroy the land. But Lot and his family were rescued. The rescue and the judgement took place parallel to each other.
In Noah’s time, he gathered two of each animal into the ark. The same waters that floated the ark, destroyed the rest of life that remained on land. When they were miraculously saved, the others were tragically lost.
When the Israelites parted the Red Sea and escaped, the same waters destroyed the Egyptians.
The book of Isaiah talks about a similar story of salvation and vengeance.
2 Thessalonians 1:8 “He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.”
The same gospel that has given us salvation, will punish those who do not obey. The gospel is not an optional thing. He will punish those who do not know God.
Acts 4:12 “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”
Only Jesus can save. We need to eagerly seek God, that is our responsibility because God has already revealed Himself to us through creation and through Jesus and through the Word.
Hebrews 1:1-2 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.
The year of the Lord’s favour and the day of His vengeance comes together. God does not send anyone to hell, this comes from a conscious decision to not obey God and believe in His Word. If you are a person that has not accepted Jesus and has completely surrendered to Him, this is the right time. There’s no need to wait another moment.
