Unapproachable Light
God being our Father desires that His children too would walk and live in holiness. There are about 527 times that we see words regarding holy/ holiness in the Bible.
In this series, we’d be focusing more on God’s holiness. When the whole world indulges in sin, God desires that His children would choose to live in holiness (Psalm 24:3,4); and moreover God promises to do wonders among those who consecrate themselves (Joshua 3:5).
In the tent of meeting, anybody could enter the outer court, whereas only priests could enter the Holy Place and only the High Priest was permitted to enter the Most Holy Place.
In this season, let us take this as a challenge to grow in holiness (purity of heart) and draw nearer to God.
The first and last songs in the Bible are regarding God’s holiness (Exodus 15:1-18; Revelation 15:3,4). Prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 6) and Apostle John (Revelation 4) were the ones fortunate in the Bible to have a preview of the throne room of God; and they saw angels worshipping the Lord day and night crying out ‘Holy, holy, holy are you Lord’. In other words, though there's nothing wrong in singing of God’s love, goodness, faithfulness, righteousness, etc; the primary focus of our worship too should be God’s holiness.
1 Timothy 6:16 who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honour and might forever. Amen.
When people living in darkness speak sarcastically about God, here we read that the true God who is immortal, lives in unapproachable light and none of this affects Him.
Isaac Newton once as an experiment, tried looking at the sun in a mirror, essentially blinding himself for 3 days and experiencing afterimages for months. Had he continued to look at the sun through the mirror, he says he would have been permanently blind. If such was the damage to the retina in looking at the Sun, which is God’s wonderful creation; what would be the survival rate of one who looks at God, the Sun of Righteousness?!
Revelation 1:17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last.
Daniel 10:16 Then one who looked like a man touched my lips, and I opened my mouth and began to speak. I said to the one standing before me, “I am overcome with anguish because of the vision, my lord, and I feel very weak.
God’s unapproachable nature is due to His extreme holiness.
Job 42:5,6 “I had heard rumours about You, but now my eyes have seen You.Therefore I take back my words and repent in dust and ashes.”
Job went through a lot of suffering though he was a good and blameless man and unknowingly he used words which he should not have and now he repents.
If we have a proper encounter with God, we’ll have to repudiate many things that we’ve heard and believed of Him; and also we would repent of our words and deeds.
When a person is in distress, he/ she needs comfort the most. God had actually sent Job’s friends to comfort him, but they argued and blamed about his righteousness and prayer life, etc.
Isaiah 6:5 Then I said: “Woe is me, for I am ruined, because I am a man of unclean lips dwelling among a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of Hosts.”
Isaiah was in the ministry of the Lord (Isaiah chapters 1-5), when he had an encounter with the Lord and these were the words when he saw the holiness of God in the heavenly realm. He repented of all the words he had spoken earlier to that.
Isaiah 40:25 Who will you compare Me to, or who is My equal?” asks the Holy One.
This is a challenging question from the Holy One and we must answer, ‘there is no comparison’. If we’d have an idea of God’s extreme holiness, we’d be more careful to live a holy life here on Earth and His grace will enable us for the same.
There is absolutely no darkness in Him at all (1 John 1:5) He is perfectly holy.
James 1:13 No one undergoing a trial should say, “I am being tempted by God.” For God is not tempted by evil, and He Himself doesn’t tempt anyone.
Habakkuk 1:13 Your eyes are too pure to look on evil, and You cannot tolerate wrongdoing.
God’s eyes are so pure that He cannot look at evil and may be that’s why the seraphim covered their faces.
Isaiah 6:2 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.
I hope these verses have helped you comprehend at least a bit of God’s holiness and may God, who is Holy help you lead a holy life as you grow deep in the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.
