Categories Of Sins

We saw the three different phases of holiness:

1. Positional Holiness (Commencement of holiness)
2. Practical/ Progressive Holiness (Continuation of holiness)
3. Perfect Holiness (Culmination of holiness)

In order to live in holiness, we must identify sin and choose to live without engaging in sinful activities.
Galatians 5:19-21 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Today, we’ll look into the different categories of sins:

1. Moral sins - sexual immorality, impurity, debauchery
2. Religious and Occultic sins - idolatry, witchcraft, etc.
3. Social sins - hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissension, envy
4. Sins due to lack of self-control - drunkenness, orgies, etc.

The true living God hates idol worship the most. Who would like it if one’s own child  communicates with a photo of their father/ mother everyday and avoids the parent who is living with them in the house?

The Bible gives two other main categories of sins:

1. Sins of Commission - doing what we ought not to do (doing the don’ts/ doing the things forbidden by God)
2. Sins of Omission - failing to do what we ought to do (not doing the dos)

The first sin ever committed by humans was a sin of commission. Eve ate the forbidden fruit and gave it to her husband. In the Old Testament period, breaking the law (failing to obey the ten commandments) was a sin of commission. In the present time, we all use mobile phones, and there's a whole lot of video content. But when we watch things that aren’t pleasing to God, that’s a sin of commission. Many ask if they could watch movies - now here’s my reply: when a man and woman become united in marriage and they live together, they’ll get to know each other’s likes and dislikes. Similarly, as we grow intimate in our relationship with Jesus, we’ll get to know His likes and dislikes regarding the choices we make / the things we do. The Holy Spirit who lives in us will give us a red signal, or a ‘NO’; and as we become sensitive to His voice and yield to it, it becomes easy for us to climb up the steps of holiness. 

James 4:17 If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn't do it, it is sin for them.
Missing out weekly fellowships, a father and mother not doing their parental responsibilities
Matthew 25:42,43 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

Luke 12:47,48 "The servant who knows the master's will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows. But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.

Failing to give for the Kingdom work, not being baptised in the Name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit, not praying to/ worshipping God - all of this comes under sin of omission. 

Let’s guard our hearts, our thoughts, our tongue and be careful seeking the help of the Holy Spirit to only do the dos and not do the don’ts mentioned by God in His Word!
