Prioritizing Prosperity
This week we’ve begun to look into the principles of divine prosperity and started off with God’s view about prosperity which is mentioned in Psalm 1:1-3, Joshua 1:8, Psalm 35:27, 2 Chronicles 20:20. Divine alignment attracts divine prosperity.
Nehemiah 2:20
The God of heaven Himself will prosper us;
3 John 1:2
Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.
David Oyedepo, a Nigerian Pastor states that ‘poverty is neither noble nor dignified. We should break the ‘neck of poverty.’ Nobody would pray to God - “God, somehow make me poor.”
We are a spirit being living in a material body and we have material needs, and prosperity is required to meet those needs. Divine prosperity simply means to have the resources to fulfil God’s purpose in your life while here on Earth.
We see a beautiful sheep-shepherd analogy in Psalm 23 which is also known as the golden psalm of David.
Psalm 23:1
The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
David who wrote this Psalm was rejected at his own home and he used to tend the sheep, but he made a huge contribution to build the Jerusalem temple from his personal asset which would be worth today’s 5 billion USD. God raised David from a shepherd boy to a king because of his confession. There were times when he had nothing and had to plead for food, but towards the end of his life God honoured him and made him increase.
2 Samuel 7:18
Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said: “Who am I, Sovereign LORD, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?
Psalm 23:2-4
He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
The secret behind David’s prosperity was the presence of God in his life and his heart was tuned and aligned to the heart of God; and that’s why David is known as ‘a man after God's heart’.
Psalm 23:5-6
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
David had many enemies, but God sorted out everything for him.
If we analyse the whole chapter: it talks about God’s provision, protection, refreshment, guidance, comfort, victory, overflow, anointing, goodness, love, mercy, eternal life. Would you like to have this God as your Shepherd? If so, your finishing will be greater and glorious than our start. God can change our story!
